The town got its name from its location. Huangzhuang village is named after its surname, but the surname Huang has no descendants. It was originally called dahuangzhuang (to distinguish Xiaohuangzhuang village in Shandong Province, the word "Da" has been omitted). In 1955, it belonged to Huangzhuang District of Yiyuan County. In March 1958, Huangzhuang Township and Xujiazhuang Township were set up. In September of the same year, it was changed into Huangzhuang commune and Xujia commune. In 1965, it was merged into Huangzhuang district. In 1971, Huangzhuang commune was restored and Xujiazhuang commune was set aside. In June 1984, it was renamed Huangzhuang district.
