Shangyanwan town belongs to Yuyang District, Yulin City, Shaanxi Province. It is located in the south of Yuyang District, adjacent to Qingquan town and shajiadian town of Mizhi County in the East, Zhenchuan town in the south, dangcha town of Hengshan County across Wuding River in the West and yuhemao town in the north. The total area is 221 square kilometers.

Historical evolution
In the early Tang Dynasty, a village was built in Hewan, which was named Yanwan because of its small salt production. To distinguish it from Zhenchuan Yanwan, it was renamed shangyanwan.
On October 12, 1946, shangyanwan was liberated and the Yanwan District Office was set up.
In August 1953, the Third District Office of Yulin County People's government was established.
In September 1958, the commune was established, and in December it was transferred to Mizhi County.
In September 1961, it returned to Yulin County with 30 production teams under its jurisdiction.
In July 1984, shangyanwan township was set up, with 32 administrative villages under its jurisdiction.
In November 1997, the township was changed into a town.
