history
Gyangze has a long history. Before the prosperity of Shigatse, it was the political and economic transportation center and the most prosperous town in houzang. It was the transportation hub between Lhasa, Yadong and Shigatse. The Qing Dynasty garrisoned 500 soldiers here to defend the border. The former local government of Tibet set up the Gyangze sect here. In 1959, it became the seat of the county and the regional Commissioner's office of Gyangze. In 1964, Gyangze Prefecture was incorporated into the Shigatse Prefecture, and Gyangze county was changed to be subordinate to the Shigatse Prefecture. Since the opening of the direct road along the river from Lhasa to Shigatse, though the number of vehicles passing through Gyangze has decreased, it is still an important place. It connects Yadong in the south, Shigatse in the west, Shandong in the East, Lhasa in the South and Lhasa in the north.

Hero City
Zongshan is the seat of the former government of Gyangze. In 1904, the leader of the British army, Lai Hepeng, led the British Invaders to invade Tibet. When they invaded Gyangze, they were severely hit by the army and people of Gyangze. Taking Zongshan as a fortress, the anti British soldiers and civilians fought to the death with the invaders equipped with the most advanced weapons at that time, using earth guns, swords, bows and arrows, and even "erdo" as a throwing tool for shepherds. In the case of running out of ammunition and food, the anti British soldiers still fought tenaciously for three days and three nights, and finally all jumped off the cliff to die for their country, showing the noble sentiment of the Chinese nation that they would rather die than surrender to resist foreign aggression . Gyangze is known as the "hero city", and Zongshan is the memorial of the Chinese nation's resistance to foreign aggression. At the same time, Zongshan completely preserved the original appearance of the suzerain government in the era of feudal serfdom, which is a rare fossil to study the feudal serfdom.
