Cangyuan was set up in 1937. It got its name from the source of Lancang River tributary. Cangyuan County was established in 1952 and changed into an Autonomous County in 1964.

Mengjiao is a place name in Dai language, which means the place (Bazi) where people first started their family business. In the yuan and Ming Dynasties, it was under the jurisdiction of Gengma chieftain; in 1891, Han Ronggao, the chieftain of Mengjiao, was granted the title of "hereditary chieftain general" and subordinate to zhenbianting. Mengjiao town was set up in 1945, under the jurisdiction of Cangyuan. Mengjiao district government was established in 1950. Mengjiao District Committee of CPC was established in 1953. In 1968, the Revolutionary Committee was established; in 1969, it was renamed Hongzhong commune; in 1984, it was renamed Mengjiao District Office; in February 1988, it was founded Mengjiao Dai Yi Lahu township.
