Mukong town was formerly known as laomukong, also known as linjiangchang in Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was established in Mukong Township in 1949 and named "Mukong" after removing the word "Lao". It was established as Mukong Township and Wanzi Township in 1953, merged into Mukong Township again in 1992, and changed to Mukong town in 2016.

The ancient "empty" of the tree is "hole", so it is named "old Mukong". in Ming and Qing Dynasties, this place was also known as "linjiangchang", which was a ferry on the Bank of pianyan River, a tributary of Wujiang River. In 1949, he set up Mukong Township, which was located in laomukong street. He removed the word "Lao" and named it "Mukong". In 1953, Mukong township was divided into Mukong Township and Wanzi township. In 1958, the people's commune system was implemented. Meanwhile, Mukong Township and Wanzi Township were abolished and merged into andI commune and Shatu commune respectively. In 1962, Mu Kong commune and Wan Zi commune were established. In 1984, Mukong commune and Wanzi commune were changed into Mukong Township and Wanzi Township respectively. In 1992, Wanzi Township in sandy area and Mukong Township in Andi district were abolished and merged into Mukong township. on January 29, 2016, Guizhou Provincial People's Government approved to abolish the construction system of Mukong Township and set up Mukong town. The administrative region and government residence will remain unchanged after the township is removed.
