Markang town is the capital of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture and the residence of markang municipal government. It is the political, cultural, financial and information center of the prefecture. It is the transportation and trade center of Northwest Sichuan. It is a Tibetan inhabited area. "Markang" in Tibetan means a place full of fire.

The town is a Tibetan settlement in Jiarong. After the merger, the total population of the town is about 31000 (2019). In 2000, the fifth census: 25337 people in malkang town and 1281 people in zhuokeji township. in 2010, the sixth census: 29535 people in malkang town and 1012 people in zhuokeji town. In 2017, there were 30239 people in malkang town.

Markang city is a high mountain and gorge area in the south of Northwest Sichuan Plateau. The area of mountain plain is about 65%, and the area of high mountain and gorge is about 35%.
