Tianwan Yi nationality township was originally under the jurisdiction of Yuexi County. After liberation, it was assigned to Shimian County in 1951. In April 1952, a joint office of Tianwan CAOKE township was set up. In 1953, Tianwan and Caoke townships were set up separately. On July 30, 1985, Tianwan Yi township was established with the approval of Sichuan Provincial People's government. Covering an area of 148.65 square kilometers, the township government is located in Zhongba, 54 kilometers away from Shimian County.
