In 1928, Huwei town was named Taiwei town; in August 1992, Huwei, Tongxin, Renhe Township were merged into Huwei town. By the end of 2018, the registered residence population of Huwei town was 23870. As of June 2020, Huwei town has 1 community and 10 administrative villages, and the town people's government is located in Dachi community.

In 1928, Taihe and Huwei merged into Taiwei town.
After 1938, Huwei township was established in Taiwei town.
In 1958, Huwei township was changed into Huwei commune.
