In 1951, it belongs to the Sixth District of Binyang County. In 1958, red star commune was established. In June 1959, Hongxing commune was changed into Chenping commune. In September 1962, Chen Ping commune was incorporated into Gaotian district. In September 1968, Gaotian district was changed into Gaotian commune. In September 1984, Gaotian commune was abolished and divided into Gaotian Township and Chenping township. In July 2005, Chen Ping Township joined Gaotian township. As of June 2020, Chenping town has jurisdiction over 2 communities and 8 administrative villages. The town people's government is stationed in Chen Pingwei.
