Shenao town was formed by the merger of Longdong town and Shenao town in December 2001. It is located in the middle of Nan'ao Island in Nan'ao County, Shantou City, Guangdong Province. In 1938, it was the township of Shenpu and Huanxi. In 1956, it was named Shenao township. In October 1958, it was the narrow stream management area. In October 1961, Shen'ao commune was established. In 1984, it was changed into a township. In October 1994, it was withdrawn from the township to build a town. In December 2001, it was merged from the original Longdong town and Shenao town. It is the only agricultural town in mountainous area of Nan'ao County.
