Hakka hat making techniques in gankeng
Gankeng is located in a small mountain village ten kilometers north of Buji street, Longgang District, Shenzhen city. There are several hundred mu of "single bamboo" in this mountain. The bamboo is very special. The head and tail of the bamboo are the same thick, and the internodes are more than 1 meter long. It is easy to cut bamboo strips. The unique skill of gankeng village's ancestors is the master's "tearing bamboo strips" with teeth. How thin the bamboo strips need to be, you can "bite" the teeth and tear out how thin they are. The "liangmaoding" bamboo strips are even and light, with good primary color and changeable patterns.
The Hakka custom of wearing cool hats has been recorded in Su Dongpo's "Su Gong Li" since the Northern Song Dynasty, and it has been nearly a thousand years. The production of gankeng cool hat has a history of 200 years since the Jiaqing year of the Qing Dynasty. In his early years, Zhang Jinchao, the ancestor of gankeng Liangmao village, learned the craft of Liangmao inherited from zhangtai, Changting Prefecture, Fujian Province, and passed it on to his children and grandchildren to make a living by weaving Liangmao. Gankeng Liangmao has been handed down by Zhang Jinchao for the sixth generation. Gankeng village is named Liangmao village after its handicraft Liangmao.
