Shangdongjie township is located in the southwest of Sangzhi County, bordering Shaba Town, Maoba Township and wanminggang township of Yongshun County. It is the border town of Zhangjiajie Yongding District, Sangzhi County and Xiangxi Yongshun County.

Shangdongjie township was established in 1954, merged into Liaojia town in 1995, and restored in 1998. Shangdongjie village was set up in the township. Located in the southwest of Sangzhi County, 36 kilometers away from the county seat, it borders on lifuta Town, Liaojia Town, daguquan Town, Shaba Town, Maoba Town, Yanjing town and wanmingang town of Yongshun County. The traditional economic crops include rice, ginger, rape, peanut, corn, sweet potato, malingshu and tobacco; there are copper, iron and albite, especially iron ore, with proven reserves of 2.5 million tons. Shangdongjie township is one of the settlements of Tujia people in Sangzhi County. There is a tradition of practicing martial arts among the people, and the folk customs are fierce.
