The origin of the name
Mawangdui is a mound raised in the impact plain of the lower reaches of Liuyang River. It is about 500 meters long and 230 meters wide. There are round and flat earth mounds on the mound, which are more than 20 meters apart from each other. The bottom is connected. From a distance, it is called "ma'andui" by the local people because it looks like a horse's saddle. There are many beautiful legends about these two earth tombs. According to Taiping Huanyu Ji of the Northern Song Dynasty, Liu Fa, king of Changsha in the Western Han Dynasty, buried his mother Cheng and Tang Erji in a place ten miles to the east of Changsha County. Local chronicles of the Ming and Qing Dynasties are also based on this record, such as "Hunan Tongzhi" in Guangxu years clearly pointed out that "the tomb of Erji is in the east of Changsha county". It is also said that it was the cemetery of King Ma Yin of Chu and his family in the Five Dynasties period, so it was named Mawangdui. It turns out that Ma Yin once built the capital of Changsha, and his father and son managed Changsha for decades, leaving many relics, such as "Jiulong hall" and "Mawang Street". Some people doubt that Mawangdui is the tomb of the Mahalanobis family. They think it's just a suspicious tomb. Moreover, some records supporting this view have been found in the local historical records. For example, the general annals of Hunan in the reign of Emperor Guangxu quoted Shanhua county annals as saying: "the tomb of King Ma is located five miles southeast of the county, and the tomb of King Ma Yinzhu of Chu is said to be 3367." from 1972 to 1974, archaeologists excavated three tombs of the Western Han Dynasty. The structure of the tomb is magnificent and complex. The outer chamber is built at the bottom of the tomb, which is composed of three outer chambers, three coffins and cushion wood. The wood coffin and its upper part are filled with charcoal, which is sealed with white paste. More than 3000 pieces of silk fabrics, silk books, silk paintings, lacquerware, pottery, bamboo slips, seals, mud seals, bamboo and wood implements, agricultural and livestock products, Chinese herbal medicine and other relics were unearthed. In addition, a well preserved female corpse and the earliest prescription book "fifty two prescriptions for diseases" on silk were unearthed from the tomb.
