Historical legend
The monk bridge is located on the Qingshu River in the southeast of Changge City. The fame of the monk bridge is not due to the special features of the bridge itself. In terms of age and structure, it is also a common stone arch bridge, and it is not built on the river. Its fame is due to the stories attached to it. The story is summed up as a simple couplet: build a floating bridge to be filial to the mother and kill the monk to avenge the father. It is said that someone's mother has an affair with a monk who lives across the river. The monk wades across the river in the cold winter and touches the person's filial piety. He builds a bridge to be filial to his mother. After his mother died, he killed the monk to avenge his father. As for the bridge, it was recorded in the annals of Changge County in 1930: "it is located 15 Li southwest of the county (the former county government is in the old town today), which is Chongyao of the city.". In 1564, Cai Shaoxian, the magistrate of the county, was founded in the 43rd year of Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. In the 10th year of Wanli (1582), Li Weichen and Xie Ke raised money to rebuild the bridge, which was renamed Jizhong bridge. The stone railings on both sides were made of iron clasps, with inscriptions. In 1661, county magistrate Liu Tao donated money to Shen Gong (Shen Quan, a native of Huating County, Jiangsu Province, a Jinshi of Shunzhi County, who was then a governor of the Constitution) and advocated the public to rebuild the temple. He built the temple of Hebo on the north bank and Shen Gong's temple. There are inscriptions on it. " From these records, it can be clearly seen that before the 10th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty, this bridge was called "monk bridge" because of "monk's fund raising". Ten years after Wanli, the reason for the name change is not known. It must have been the above-mentioned affiliated Association at that time, and the "villagers" felt indecent and changed it. It has been more than 400 years since its name was changed. Few people know the name of the bridge: "helping the masses". On the contrary, the more the name of the "monk bridge" is called, the louder it is. Later, the name of the station on the Beijing Guangzhou railway was called "monk bridge", and the name of the town on the outskirts of Changge City was also called "monk bridge". In fact, it was common for monks to raise money to build bridges. It is said that there are 17 bridges called "monk bridge" in China. I'm afraid it's hard to know where and when the legend of this association started. It's hard to tell whether it's a story from the romance of the bridge or whether it's attached to the bridge. In fact, it is entirely possible for such a story to happen in feudal society, and the tragedy is a social tragedy. The monk bridge in Changge is just one of many common monk bridges, and the story is not the "patent" of this bridge. The reason why "monk bridge" has become an enduring topic is that it is a complex humanistic phenomenon.
