Origin and distribution

Shitou goose is the largest goose species in China. It is named because its head is like a lion's head. Native to Xilou village, Raoping County, Guangdong Province, the main production areas are in Chenghai county and the suburbs of Shantou City. According to the survey in 2002, there are more than 20000 breeding geese in the production area. Over the years, it has provided brood to all parts of China.

Variety formation

Xilou village is a small basin in mountainous area, with mild climate, abundant water and grass, more paddy fields, rich in rice and coarse cereals, sufficient feed and superior grazing conditions. The breed has a long history of local breeding. It was later spread to Gu'an township of Chao'an county, and then to Yuepu township of Chenghai county. It was crossed with the bamboo goose and other medium-sized goose breeds of Nashi county. The offspring with the appearance of Shitou goose was selected and became the Shitou goose with large breeding quantity after long-term cultivation.

The body is square, the head is big, the neck is thick, and the front body is slightly high. The male goose walks with his head high. The ratio of male to female was 1:5-6. The grazing geese mated naturally in water. The fertilization rate and hatching rate of eggs produced by 1-year-old female geese were 69% and 87% respectively, and 79.2% and 90% respectively.

Geese have a strong nest, and they nest once after each egg. Some female geese have no or very weak nest preference. This kind of goose only accounts for about 5% of the total.
