Chengtan town is located in the west of Xinchang County, Zhejiang Province, 12 kilometers away from the county seat, at the junction with Shengzhou, 11 kilometers away from the entrance of Yongjin expressway, and 12 kilometers away from the entrance of shangsan expressway. The traffic is convenient. The main stream of Cao'e River, chengtan River, runs through the whole area. It is known as "Millennium ancient town" and "industrial town".

In 2000, it was identified as one of the three central towns by the county, in 2002, it was defined as the sub center of the county by the county planning, and in 2007, it was established as the central town by the city. In 2010, it was established as a provincial central town, becoming one of the only two provincial central towns in Xinchang County.
