Historical evolution
Yudong, formerly known as Yuqing, is also known as Fengcheng. It began in the Tang Dynasty, flourished in the Northern Song Dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It has experienced the development process of Yanting (Kaiyuan of Tang Dynasty), yuqingzhai (Qianfu of Tang Dynasty), Yuqing salt farm (Northern Song Dynasty), Yudong salt farm (Yuan Dynasty), yudongcheng (Ming Dynasty) and Yudong Town (after Qing Dynasty).
Before Tang Dynasty
During the northern and Southern Dynasties (420-589 A.D.), Yudong began to appear on the surface of the water, and then gradually accumulated into a narrow ridge, known as "niujiaozhi".
Tang dynasty
In the first year of Tang civilization (684 AD), Yuchi Baoqing, a descendant of Yuchi Gong, took refuge here because of Xue Gang's rebellion against the Tang Dynasty and built a village. Yuqing was named after Yuqing. Since then, immigrants gradually settled down, and the government exiled a large number of prisoners to reclaim here, gradually forming a coastal village. In the fourth year of Kaiyuan (716 AD), Yanting was built. Li Chengshi, the deposed envoy of Dali, inspected the place and built a dike to cook salt. Yudong was named "Li Zao" after this. In the second year of Qianfu (875 AD), Yudong established Yuqing village, which together with Langshan, Shigang, Caigang and Xizhai were the five fortresses of military defense in Tongzhou.
Song dynasty
During the period of Taiping Xingguo in the Northern Song Dynasty (976-983 AD), Yudong's salt industry flourished. Merchants from Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Shanxi and other places successively came here to open shops and build yuqingchang.
Yuan dynasty
In the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD), due to the rise and fall of the tides of the river and the sea, large areas of land were connected. Yuqing was renamed Yudong because it was located in the east of yuzhongsha. This name has been used to this day. At that time, there were 29 salt farms in the Huaihe and Huaihe rivers, and yudongchang was one of them.
the Ming dynasty
Yudong was a military fortress because of its riverside and sea front. During the Hongwu Period of Ming Dynasty (1371 AD), Tang He, the Duke of Xin state, was ordered to build a city and build a lot of buildings here. The whole Yudong city is surrounded by the river. Ten temples are built inside and outside the city. There is no city wall, but there are four towers (Kuixing tower in the east gate, also known as Zhenhai tower, Sanyi tower in the south gate, Huoshen tower in the west gate, Zhenwu tower in the North gate), five archways, halls, meetings and courtyards. Yudong has developed into an official town from a natural market town. Yudong city is also called Fengcheng because its overall pattern is similar to that of Phoenix.
the Qing dynasty
In the Qing Dynasty, the salt industry of the two Huaihe rivers was at its peak. In 1768, there were 23 salt farms in the two Huaihe rivers, one of which was yudongchang.
According to records, there were 108 gate halls in Yudong City, of which more than 10 were decorated with various plaques (all destroyed during the Cultural Revolution).
At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, due to the eastward movement of the coast and the fading out of salt industry, many Yudong people withdrew their stoves for farming. But before liberation, Yudong had always been the political, economic and cultural center of Tongdong area (the eastern part of Nantong City).
In 1903, Zhang Jian set up the only primary school in Tongdong, the ninth primary school in Nantong county.
The Republic of China
In 1928, the first Communist Party branch of Tongdong was established in Yudong primary school.
In May 1948, Yudong was liberated successfully and became the only town in Haimen that was liberated by armed struggle.
