He has a deep skill in the study of ancient Chinese characters. Qi Gaizao, who was studying in Jiangsu Province, hired Li zhaoluo to take charge of Xu Kai's biography of Shuowen Jiezi (commonly known as "Xiaoxu Ben") when he re engraved Xu Kai's biography of Shuowen Jiezi (commonly known as "Xiaoxu Ben") in the academic department. Li Zeming and his disciple Cheng Peiyuan participated in the revision and collation work, copying all the seal characters of the book. After the completion of the book, he also wrote a volume of "xiaoshenji". Cheng's academic character was affirmed by scholars at that time. For example, Lin Zexu appreciated him very much. He was specially invited to the curtain and presented a copy: "Shuo Wen Jie Zi by Xu Shuchong and Ji Wen by Wang Bohou." The first couplet praises Cheng Peiyuan for being as proficient in Philology as Xu Shen (Zi Shuo Zhong), who wrote Shuo Wen Jie Zi. The second couplet praises Cheng Peiyuan for being as knowledgeable as Wang Ying Lin (Zi Bo Hou), a scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty who wrote "notes on difficult learning".
