Zhang Xiling (1828-1871) was born in dajiangtou, Hekou Township, Ninghua County, Fujian Province in Qing Dynasty.
A scholar in the 28 years of Daoguang. Zhang Xiling enthusiastically advocated the establishment of private schools, set up schools to teach students, and called poor children to school free of charge. In the past, the mountains around dajiangtou were bare, and Zhang Xiling invited people from Jicun village to plant pines with tea. A few years later, the forest became lush and shady. Zhang Xiling invited villagers to make a ban to protect them. In the fourth year of tongzhi (1865), Tian Fu increased from 3.18 Liang to 3.23 Liang every two years. In October, Zhang Xiling added "jiapai". Understanding the sufferings of the people, Zhang Xiling kowtowed to ask for exemption from "jiapai", and was dismissed by the magistrate. In the eighth year of Tongzhi, the grain harvest failed, but the tax rate increased to 3.87 Liang. Zhang Xiling once again submitted a petition for the people's orders. There was a sentence in it that "white bones fill gullies everywhere, mourning for the wild and eating tigers and wolves everywhere". The county magistrate was moved to see that he was reasonable and sincere, but he was forced by his superior's order to report the petition and continue to urge the levy. However, Zhang Xiling's refusal quickly spread to the whole county, and the townships in the West and South responded one after another, forming a wave of refusal. When the governor of Fujian heard of the newspaper, he issued a strict order to investigate the case. He sent 300 soldiers to tingzhangdao to sit in dajiangtou for four months. The local people would rather suffer extortion, burning, looting and even forced to flee, and vowed not to hand over Zhang Xiling. Finally, the officers and soldiers bribed Xiling's wife and uncle Deng, and then trapped Zhang Xiling in his family in Shicheng. After Zhang Xiling was arrested, he dissuaded his family members to stop him on the way of escorting him and expressed his willingness to send him to Tingzhou for treatment. The official summoned Zhang Xiling and found out that his tax was very small, so he advised him to "be good at his own body and not take care of his leisure.". Xiling replied: "nine you faint, who is more into, willing to ride the mercy of all living beings.". Tui Guan asked: "the whole country is the same. Why does one person resist?" Xiling replied, "if you build a bridge with one person, you can avoid people falling into the water." "Can it be done?" the official asked Xiling replied, "clear water can do it, muddy water can't." Zhang Xiling was sentenced to death. He was killed on October 1st, 1871, at the age of 43.
