Zhang Shiying

Zhang Shiying (1921-september 10, 2020), born in Wuhan, is a famous contemporary philosopher, philosophy historian, aesthetician, philosophy educator, famous professor of Philosophy Department of Peking University, honorary member of Academic Committee of the 24th World Philosophy Congress, honorary president of Institute of cultural inheritance and innovation of Peking University, chief editor of Chinese edition of Hegel's works, and Research Association of Chinese and western philosophy and culture President, director of the academic committee of the aesthetic research center of Peking University, and winner of the lifelong achievement award of philosophy education of Peking University, creatively put forward the philosophy system of "all things are interlinked" and the life realm theory of "beauty lies in freedom".

He graduated from the Department of philosophy of southwest United University of Kunming in 1946, taught in Nankai University and Wuhan University from 1946 to 1952, and taught in Peking University in 1952.

At present, he is professor and doctoral supervisor of Department of philosophy of Peking University, director of Academic Committee of aesthetic research center of Peking University, editor in chief of Chinese version of complete works of Hegel (people's Publishing House), consultant of all China Society for the history of foreign philosophy, honorary consultant of Cambridge International biography center, honorary consultant of American Biography center, and honorary consultant of Nanjing University, Henan University, Hebei University and Hubei University He is an adjunct professor.

He once served as the president of the Chinese and western philosophy and Culture Research Association, the first academic leader of Western Philosophy in China, and the chief editor of German Philosophy Series (1986-2001).

In 2012, Zhang Shiying was awarded the "Peking University philosophy education lifelong achievement award". In 2017, Peking University established the "Zhang Shiying aesthetic philosophy academic award fund" and held the award ceremony on December 26 of the same year.

From June 20 to 21, 2020, the Symposium on Zhang Shiying and contemporary Chinese comparative philosophy will be held. At the opening ceremony of the conference, Mr. Zhang Shiying sent a message through a short video that "harmony is different, everything is interlinked".

At 10:49 on September 10, 2020, Zhang Shiying died at Peking University International Hospital at the age of 100

Academic achievements

Mr. Zhang's most important academic contribution is to establish the philosophical system of "all things are interlinked". With the publication of "the world between man and nature -- the confusion and choice of Chinese and Western Philosophy" and "entering a clear realm -- the new direction of philosophy", a "new philosophy" system covering ontology, epistemology, aesthetics, ethics and historical philosophy has initially formed. Later published "Introduction to Philosophy", officially announced the birth of a philosophy system with distinctive characteristics of the times and personality: the philosophy of universal communication. Its core idea is: all things are different and interlinked. "The philosophy of all things interlinked" not only inherits the thought tradition of "the unity of all things" in ancient Chinese philosophy, but also integrates the thought tradition of "subject object dichotomy" in western philosophy, especially in modern western philosophy.

In Mr. Zhang's view, the ancient Chinese theory of "the unity of all things" or "the unity of heaven and man" lacks the stage of "the dichotomy of subject and object" in modern western philosophy. The direct consequence is that human subjectivity is suppressed and science is not popular. Modern western philosophy of subjectivity promoted science and democracy, but the excessive expansion of subjectivity caused the tension between man and nature and even between man and man. The philosophy of "all things are interlinked" aims to avoid their own one sidedness and integrate the western "subjective philosophy" into China's "all things in one" ideological tradition. In Mr. Zhang's view, for the current China, the most urgent task is to make up the lesson of "subjectivity" in western philosophy. In order to rise in the world in the future, Chinese culture needs the further liberation of "individual self". "Chinese and Western culture and self" and "the course of awakening: outline of phenomenology of Chinese spirit" have enlightening effect in this respect. What is particularly valuable is that Mr. Zhang further put forward the theory of "beauty lies in freedom" on the basis of the philosophy of "all things are interlinked". It can be said that the philosophy of "all things are interlinked" is one of the most original philosophical systems in contemporary China.

Zhang Shiying's theory of "four realms of life" is the concrete implementation and embodiment of his philosophy of "all things are interlinked" at the practical level. It is the theoretical crystallization of Zhang Shiying's use of his philosophy to explore the construction of Chinese people's theoretical personality and the path of prosperity and development of Chinese culture under the background of world multipolarization, economic globalization, cultural pluralism and social informatization. Philosophy education

Mr. Zhang is a famous philosophical educator. As a "teacher", Mr. Zhang has always been conscientious and tireless in teaching. He has won wide praise from generations of students and cultivated a number of outstanding philosophers. It is particularly worth mentioning that at the age of 80, he opened an introduction to Philosophy Course for undergraduates. His book of the same name has become a designated textbook or reference book for philosophy departments in many universities and won the simian original award. Mr. Zhang's lecture footprints are all over the country, and his students are all over the world. In 2017, the first Zhang Shiying Academic Award for aesthetic philosophy was awarded to Chen Lai, President and philosopher of Sinology Research Institute of Tsinghua University, and Zhu Liangzhi, Professor of liberal arts and aesthetician of Peking University. On May 19, 2019, the second Zhang Shiying Academic Award Fund for aesthetic philosophy was presented to the education foundation of Peking University. Five scholars from five universities won the award. Yang Guorong, a professor of East China Normal University, and Zhou Xian, a professor of Nanjing University, won the academic achievement award of aesthetic philosophy. The first winners of this year's Young Scholar Award are Gu Chunfang, Professor of Art College of Peking University, Xu Yingjin, Professor of philosophy College of Fudan University, and Zhang Butian, Professor of Humanities College of Tsinghua University.
