Ye Zuyi, Ziyou, was born in Wuzhou (now Jinhua, Zhejiang). In his early years, he entered the Imperial College, and later he became a scholar.

Ye Zuyi had a good reputation. He was dismissed because of his multilingualism. Only a few monks from West Lake had a good relationship with him and held a banquet to see him off. Monk said: "the world is just like a dream!" ye Zudao: If ye, like a dream, the monk goes out to see each other off. He who hears of it will never die.
