Chen Yuyi

Chen Yuyi is a famous poet at the turn of the northern and Southern Song Dynasty. Although there are only more than ten of his poems today, they have a unique style, especially close to Su Dongpo. They have excellent meaning, broad brush, bright and natural. His ancestors lived in Jingzhao, and his great grandfather Chen Xiliang moved to Luoyang, so he was born in Luoyang, Henan Province in Song Dynasty. His teacher, Du Fu, also valued Su Shi, Huang Tingjian and Chen Shidao. He was born in the fifth year of Yuanyou (1090) and died in the eighth year of Shaoxing (1138). Chen Yuyi was a professor of local government studies and a doctor of Taixue in the Northern Song Dynasty. In the Southern Song Dynasty, he was an important official of the imperial court and a patriotic poet. His main contribution was in poetry. He left many Patriotic Poems Concerning the country and the people for later generations. There are 19 poems. He once served as an aide of Taifu in Yuhang. Later, he was appreciated by the prime minister and was promoted. His poetry can be divided into two periods: before and after Jin Bing invaded the Central Plains. In Yuan Dynasty, Fang Hui called Du Fu the "first ancestor" of Jiangxi School, and Huang Tingjian, Chen Shidao and Chen Yuyi the "three schools". Chen Yuyi is not a native of Jiangxi Province. Although he is similar to Chen Shidao in his poems, he emphasizes artistic conception and is good at describing in plain language, which is quite different from Huang Tingjian's allusion and inflexibility. Therefore, he should not be included in Jiangxi poetry school. Chen Yuyi's poems are most close to Du's poems. For example, one of "climbing Yueyang Tower", "Ba Qiu Shu Shi", "poems with emotion after climbing Yueyang Tower again", "New Year's Eve" and so on are full of solemn and stirring feelings. Five character rhythms, such as two poems of rain and new year's Eve, are well known for their sharp carving in Qing Dynasty. The five character ancient poetry is close to Xie Lingyun, Liu Zongyuan and so on.
