He was born in dongmenwai, Houguan County, Fujian Province (now TA tou, Dongmen Village, Hongshan Town, Gulou District, Fuzhou City) and was a writer of the Qing Dynasty. According to the chronicle of Mr. Wei Zian, he was born in 1818 and died in 1873.

Life of the characters

His father Wei Ben Tang, Jiaqing Ji Mao Ju Ren, once served as Taiwan County school instructor, Shanghang County school teacher, Tingzhou University Professor, etc., and wrote reading notes and aizhuozhai collection. Wei xiuren studied Confucian classics and history with his father when he was young. At the age of 28, he was admitted as a scholar. At the age of 29, he was admitted as a member of the Daoguang Bingwu imperial examination. After that, he failed to be a scholar. In April of 1856, Wei xiuren went to Taiyuan to become an aide of Wang Qingyun, governor of Shanxi Province. In June of the next year, Wang Qingyun was promoted to governor of Sichuan Province. He followed him to Sichuan, and soon returned to Taiyuan from Pengshan, Sichuan Province. In early 1858, he went to the magistrate's bowling home in Taiyuan to teach apprentices. In September of the same year, he returned to Sichuan from Taiyuan and entered Wang Qingyun's tent again. Later, he lectured in the academies of Weinan and Chengdu, and was the president of Furong Academy in Chengdu. Wei xiuren returned to his hometown of Fujian in 1861. He lived in poverty by teaching. In 1873, Wei xiuren took his family to Yanping (now Nanping), and soon died of poverty and disease. He died at the age of 56.

Wei xiuren's works mainly include the novel "traces of flowers and moons". His "preface to himself" says: "seeing current affairs is dangerous, hands are not big, words are not different, and dirty and depressive spirit has nothing to express. Most of the content of Wei xiuren's novel huayuehen was created by him during his stay at the bowling house of the magistrate of Taiyuan in the past half a year from the "view of late spring" in the eighth year of Xianfeng to the "day before heavy ninth" in the autumn of the same year. According to Wei xiuren's good friend, Changle Xie Zhangdi, in his sequel to extracurricular activities, he wrote: "at that time, Zian lived in Shanxi, and he lived in baomianqin, the prefect of Taiyuan. He married Du Caiqiu, a famous prostitute in Bingzhou, and finally returned home with his beautiful concubine and maid. Although Liu qiuchen, an important character in the novel, fell into the prostitute's family and was ashamed to be defiled, he was unwilling to sink down and died for love. It is a rare and shining prostitute image in ancient Chinese novels who was insulted and fought hard.

According to Lin Jiaqin's research on the traces of flowers and moon, "Wei Chizhu's self-image of Mr. Wei. However, there are too many poems and verses in huayuehen, and they are separated from the plot, which weakens the moving power of the novel. It is not difficult to see that it is in a transitional stage in the development track from the novels of gifted scholars and beautiful ladies in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties to the novels of the late Qing Dynasty.

The original edition of huayuehen, titled huayuehen Quanshu, was published in 1888 in shuanghulu, Fujian Province. It contains the eyebrows of Qixia residents and comments after returning. It is also printed by Shanghai Publishing House in 1893 and the complete biography of huayuehen by Yuwen publishing house in 1893.
