Lin Keming
Lin Keming
A pioneer of modern Chinese architecture, senior architect, born in Dongguan, Guangdong, graduated from Lyon Institute of architecture and engineering, France. After returning home, he made great contributions to the urban architectural design of Guangzhou. Starting from Haizhu bridge, along Haizhu Square, Guangzhou municipal government, Zhongshan Memorial Hall and Zhongshan monument, this 12 km long central axis of Guangzhou, which runs through the north and south, is an important part of Guangzhou's historical backbone. The harmonious and unified architectural style depends on Lin Keming's outspoken and unique design vision. Guangzhou municipal government is another masterpiece of Lin Keming, whose architectural style and modeling method are carried out under the design concept of "harmony but difference". Zhongshan literature museum is Lin Keming's first design project after he returned to Guangzhou. It is also his first attempt to design with traditional architectural forms.

Reform and opening up has brought spring to the development of Science in China, but also to the first generation of famous architect and architectural educator in New China, century old man Lin Keming.
Character experience
Born in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province in July 1900, he studied in the English Department of Guangdong Normal University (the predecessor of National Sun Yat sen University (South China University of Technology)) in 1918. He went to France to work and study in 1920. The next year, he was selected to study architectural engineering in Lyon University of China and France. He graduated from Lyon Institute of architecture and Engineering in 1926. After returning to China in 1926, he was in charge of road engineering and urban planning in Shantou Public Works Department. In 1928, he came to Guangzhou as a technician of the design course of the municipal works bureau. In 1929, he was a part-time professor of the provincial industrial school. In 1930, he was employed as a consultant of the construction project of Zhongshan Memorial Hall in Guangzhou. In 1932, he founded the Department of architecture of Xiangqin University, one of the earliest architectural engineering departments in China, and served as a professor and head of the Department. In the same year, he resigned from the public works bureau. Lin Keming architectural design office was established in 1933. In 1945, he was a professor in the Department of architecture, School of technology, National Sun Yat sen University (South China University of Technology).
Since 1949, Lin Keming has been in charge of technical leadership in Huangpu construction administration bureau, Guangzhou Municipal Construction Planning Commission, Guangzhou Construction Engineering Bureau, Guangzhou Urban Planning Commission and Guangzhou Design Institute. He was vice president of Guangzhou Design Institute in 1972 and transferred to deputy director and chief engineer of Guangzhou capital construction commission in 1975. Since 1979, he has been a professor in the Department of architecture of South China Institute of technology and President of its design and Research Institute.
Lin Keming is a deputy to the first, second and third National People's congresses, a member of the Fifth National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference, a member of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference, and vice chairman of the Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference. In 1992, he was awarded the title of "Guangzhou excellent expert and Scholar" by Guangzhou municipal Party committee and Guangzhou Municipal People's government. In 1990, he was awarded the "special allowance of the government". From 1953 to 1978, he was the executive director and vice chairman of the Chinese Architectural Society. Mr. Lin Keming died in March 1999 in Guangzhou.
Participate in the National Science Conference
Anyone who mentions Lin Keming in the field of architecture will know that he studied in France in his early years and has been engaged in architectural design since returning home. He is a famous architect in China. But ordinary people don't know it, but when it comes to the Great Hall of the people in Beijing and the Zhongshan Memorial Hall in Guangzhou, people all over the country know it, and these two "works" embody Lin Keming's painstaking efforts. Of course, there are gymnasium, overseas Chinese building, science museum, fair exhibition hall (Haizhu Square hall, Liuhua Hall), Oriental Hotel, Renmin bridge, Baiyun Hotel, Liuhua Hotel and many other buildings in old Guangzhou, all of which are his "masterpieces".
However, such a scientist who devoted himself to the cause of socialist construction in the motherland was beaten as a "bourgeois academic authority" during the "Cultural Revolution", and was sent to the "May 7th" cadre school to work, suffering a lot. In 1972, he was "liberated" and returned to work, but his heart was not "liberated". In his own words, he was not interested in returning to work.
In 1977, Deng Xiaoping first set out to bring order out of chaos in the field of science, education and culture, and proposed to respect science and talents. The abandoned college entrance examination system in the "Cultural Revolution" was restored. Lin Keming thought it was wise to do so.
In 1978, it was very unforgettable and exciting for Lin Keming. In February, he was elected to the first session of the fifth CPPCC National Committee. In March, he participated in the National Science Conference as a contributing scientist. This is an unprecedented grand meeting in the history of Science in China. At the meeting, he listened to Comrade Deng Xiaoping's Expositions on "science and technology are productive forces", "intellectuals are already a part of the working class itself", "four modernizations, the key is the modernization of science and technology". He felt that the catastrophe that dampened the enthusiasm of intellectuals was finally over, the hearts of Chinese intellectuals were liberated, and China ushered in the spring of great development of science and technology. For this reason, he put forward many suggestions in the discussion of Guangdong group at the meeting.
In December 1978, the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China was held, which strengthened the old scientist's belief in keeping up with the pace of the party's reform and opening up. He believes that the extreme "left" line has caused great and irreparable losses to the party and the state. Only the reform and opening-up policy can solve many problems existing in the past, and build socialism with Chinese characteristics, so that we can see a bright future.
Old age, several sunset red
In the first 10 years of reform and opening up, Lin Keming was 80 to 90 years old. At this time, he was still a professor of South China Institute of technology, President of Huagong Architectural Design Institute, deputy director of Guangzhou Municipal Construction Commission, consultant of Guangzhou Municipal Design Institute, member of the National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference (after the expiration, he was also a member of the provincial Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference), and vice chairman of Guangzhou Municipal Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference. His work and social activities were busy, but he did not slack off, and he still did his best to make more contributions.
At the invitation of the Shenzhen Municipal Party committee, he participated in the urban planning of Shenzhen. At a large-scale conference on Shenzhen economic development planning, Lin Keming made a long speech after in-depth investigation and research, which attracted the attention of Liang Xiang, then Secretary of the municipal Party committee. Later, he took part in the discussion of Shenzhen's urban construction planning, which was organized by Gu Mu, then Vice Premier of the State Council, and attended by several famous architects in Beijing.
At the invitation of Foshan Municipal Science and Technology Commission, he wrote and created the plan of Foshan Science Museum. Because the guiding ideology of the design attaches importance to the environment and meets the requirements of economy and applicability, he soon stood out from more than 20 plans collected by the unit and was selected for adoption. Today, Foshan Science Museum is still a distinctive building in Foshan.
At the age of 82, he proposed the design of the auditorium of CUHK, Liang Qiuju hall, which was selected by Sun Yat sen University. This is an auditorium with 2000 seats. At the initial stage, it was considered to invest 3 million Hong Kong dollars (equivalent to 1.2 million to 1.5 million yuan at that time), and he proposed to add it to 6 million Hong Kong dollars. After completion, it is generally accepted that the project is economical and practical.
In 1982, he participated in the study of the master plan of Guangzhou. At the master plan meeting of Guangzhou City presided over by the then Mayor Liang Lingguang, he put forward different opinions on several buildings to be built in Guangzhou at that time: first, he pointed out that the location of white swan hotel was unreasonable; second, he pointed out that the location of Jiangwan new town was also unreasonable; third, he opposed the construction of a 35 storey, 130 meter high financial building in front of Zhongshan Memorial Hall (this opinion was adopted later).
During this period, he also grew up and participated in the design of overseas Chinese hospital, Huagong teaching building and Guangzhou University (former site). He insisted on tutoring graduate students for three hours twice a week. In this way, he wrote his own sunset.
A gift for posterity
In 1990, Lin Keming, who was over 90 years old, retired in Guangzhou Design Institute; five units, including Guangzhou Architectural Society, jointly held "Lin Keming's 90th birthday celebration conference". In the same year, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of China's engineering technology, the State Council decided to grant him special government allowance and certificate. In 1992, Lin Keming, a famous Chinese architect, published by science popularization press and reflecting his architectural works over the years, met the readers.
After retirement, while enjoying his old age, the old man wrote a nearly 100000 word memoir "century review", which reviewed his nearly a century's experience from different aspects of life, such as determination, going to France, starting, living in Vietnam, cheering liberation, dedication, academic views and moral cultivation, and recorded his people's architectural view. This autobiographical work fills the gap in the field of recording architects' Monographs in China. It is not only a precious treasure left by the older generation of architects such as Lin Keming, but also a blessing for the architectural circles in China. Undoubtedly, it will be beneficial to connecting the past and the future.
Characters and deeds
representative work
In his 99 years of life and decades of career, Mr. Lin has left many outstanding works. He once participated in the design and construction of Zhongshan Memorial Hall, and later designed a series of buildings with "national inherent style" combining the local characteristics of Guangdong. His most important representative works include the National Sun Yat sen University complex (now located in the campus of South China University of technology and South China Agricultural University) and the office building of Guangzhou municipal government offices.
