Life of the characters
Follow Guo Wei
Yang tingzhang's family has always been humble. One of his elder sisters lived as a widow in the capital. Guo Wei, the Taizu of Zhou Dynasty, was a low-ranking soldier and wanted to marry her. However, his elder sister refused to accept her. Guo Wei asked the matchmaker to send a message to coerce him. His elder sister told Yang tingzhang about this. Yang tingzhang went to Guo Wei and after meeting with him, Yang tingzhang came back and said to his elder sister, "this man is unusual in appearance. We can't refuse him." My sister obeyed him and married Guo Wei. When Guo Wei was guarding Taiyuan with Liu Zhiyuan, Ting Zhang visited his sister in Taiyuan many times. He was simple and prudent, and Guo Wei appreciated him very much. After the death of Yang tingzhang's sister, Guo Wei left him at his side to serve. In the process of Guo Wei's going out to fight against the three rebellious vassal towns and leading troops to Beijing to overthrow the later Han Dynasty, Yang tingzhang offered many wonderful strategies. In the first year of Guangshun (951), Guo Wei ascended the throne, recognized Yang tingzhang's elder sister as Shufei, and promoted Yang tingzhang as youfeilong envoy. Yang tingzhang resolutely refused to accept the award and was willing to transfer it to his father Yang Hongyu. Guo Wei ordered Yang Hongyu to be summoned to the capital. However, Yang Hongyu refused to be an official because he was old and sick, so he only gave him the title of doctor jinziguanglu and Zhending Shaoyin.
Assist Shizong
After following Guo Wei, Yang tingzhang successively held the posts of Imperial City envoy, Zhaoyi military commander, and Chanzhou (now Puyang, Henan Province) inspection envoy. At that time, Chai Rong served as the governor of Chanzhou as the prince. Chai Rong was the nephew of Chai, Guo Wei's wife. Later, he was adopted by Guo Wei as his adopted son, so he called Yang tingzhang his uncle. In 953, Chai Rong returned from Tianyuan to work in the capital. He praised Guo Wei for Yang tingzhang's ability, and Guo Wei promoted Yang tingzhang as guest provincial envoy. At that time, Shi Yi, the commander-in-chief guarding Jingyuan, said that he was ill and did not appear in court. Guo Wei ordered Yang tingzhang to replace him. When he was about to leave, Guo Wei said to him, "if Shi Yi doesn't accept the order of the imperial court, he will try to solve him." After Yang tingzhang arrived at Jingyuan, he asked all the people around him to retreat. He showed the imperial edict to Shi Yi and analyzed the advantages and disadvantages for him. Shi Yi listened to him and went to the capital to meet the emperor that day. It wasn't long before Yang tingzhang arrived at Jingyuan, but Guo Wei died. After hearing the news, Yang tingzhang vomited blood and didn't eat for a few days.
Guard Jinzhou
After Chai Rong ascended the throne of Zhou Shizong, he worshipped Yang tingzhang as the general of zuoxiaowei and served as the ambassador of Huibei court. In the first year of Later Zhou Xiande (954), Zhou Shizong Chai Rong led the army to fight against Liu Chong in the northern Han Dynasty. Yang tingzhang was appointed as Jianxiong army's festival. He had been in town for several years and had a lot of kindness and love for the army and the people. He led his troops into Taiyuan in the northern Han Dynasty, uprooted Renyi, Gaobi and other barracks, captured dozens of assassins and military academies, captured thousands of households of the people in the northern Han Dynasty, and captured tens of thousands of weapons, sheep and horses. The northern Han Dynasty was forced to give up the place 200 Li south of Qinzhou and surrender to the new town. Yang tingzhang then set up more than ten villages such as Bao'an, Xingtong and Baibi. In 957, Chai Rong, the emperor of Zhou Shizong, led the army to attack the Southern Tang Dynasty. At this time, Sun Yi, the governor of Xizhou (now Xixian County, Shanxi Province), died of illness. Li Qianpu, commander of the military and horse capital of Jinzhou, said to Yang tingzhang: "Xizhou Daning (today's Shanxi Daning) is an important place of the throat, which can't be neglected. If the emperor had been asked to wait for a reply, Xizhou would have been occupied. " Yang tingzhang immediately signed a letter and ordered Li Qianpu to act as governor of Xizhou. After Li Qianpu arrived in Xizhou, the northern Han army came to attack Xizhou city as expected. Yang tingzhang's staff who participated in the plan thought that they should rescue him as soon as possible. Yang tingzhang said: "the defense of Xizhou city is solid and complete. The northern Han army came in a hurry, so we must defeat them with a clever plan." He recruited more than 100 brave men who were not afraid of death and promised to give them a heavy reward. He sent people from the path to Xizhou to prepare Li Qianpu for internal cooperation and external cooperation. After the Zhou army arrived, they attacked quietly at night, and the Zhou soldiers in Xizhou city also rushed out, and the northern Han army was defeated. The Zhou army took advantage of the victory and pursued for dozens of miles, beheaded more than 1000 people and won a complete victory. When the memorial was sent to Chai Rong, Chai Rong said happily, "my uncle is really able to resist the enemy." After that, an imperial edict was issued to praise Yang tingzhang, followed by the inspection of the Taibao. In the summer of the sixth year of Xiande's reign (959), Yang tingzhang led his troops to enter the boundary of Hedong, captured 13 fortresses, and recruited Jin Hanchao, the inspection envoy of the northern Han Dynasty. In June of the sixth year of Xiande (959), Chai Rong died, Emperor Zhougong ascended the throne, and Yang tingzhang was granted the title of imperial inspector.
Loyalty to the Northern Song Dynasty
In the first month of the seventh year of Xiande (960), Zhao Kuangyin called himself Emperor, changed the Yuan Dynasty to Jianlong, and established the Northern Song Dynasty. Yang tingzhang was appointed as an official to inspect the Taiwei, and the local officials and people went to the imperial court to ask for a monument to praise his merits. Zhao Kuangyin, song Taizu, ordered Lu duoxun to write inscriptions and reward him. In April of the first year of Jianlong (960), Li Yun fought against the Song Dynasty. He secretly sent his relatives to ask him to bring a secret letter to the neighboring countries for help. Yang tingzhang captured him, shackled him and escorted him to the capital. He took the opportunity to offer a plan to capture Li Yun. Zhao Kuangyin immediately ordered him to entrust the plan to him. When Zhao Kuangyin personally attacked Li Yun, he ordered Yang tingzhang to lead his troops into the underworld to contain Li Yun's troops. After Li Yun was pacified, Yang tingzhang led his troops back to the military town. After Yang tingzhang returned to Jinzhou, Zhao Kuangyin appointed Jing Hanru as the ruler. Because Yang tingzhang was a close relative of the Zhou Dynasty, Jing Hanru suspected that he had two hearts for the Song Dynasty. Every time he entered Yang tingzhang's house, his followers held swords and wanted to find a chance to kill Yang tingzhang. Yang tingzhang, on the other hand, treated each other sincerely without any defense, and Jing Hanru did not dare to do it, so there was no disaster in the end. People who talk about this all say that it is because Yang tingzhang saved Shi Yi's life in Jingzhou and accumulated Yin virtue, which is a reward for him.
He died in his old age
In the autumn of the first year of Jianlong (960), Yang tingzhang went to the capital to meet the emperor, and was transferred to guard Yingzhou. In the fourth year of Qiande (966), he was transferred to Bingzhou. In the second year of Kaibao (969), he was called into the capital and served as the general of youqianniuwei. In the fourth year of Kaibao (971), Yang tingzhang died of illness at the age of 60. Yang tingzhang had seven sons, but he didn't ask for official positions for them. He just asked for an official position for his nephew an chongxun (son of an chongjiao).
Anecdotes and allusions
When Yang tingzhang's father Yang Hongyu was young, he used to fish in diaoqiupi in Zhending. Suddenly, a man on a fast horse gave him two stone geese, one covering the left wing and the other covering the right wing. The man said, "I am the messenger of Beiyue." At that time, Yang's mother gave birth to Yang tingzhang's sister (later married to Guo Wei, who was later named Shufei after he became emperor). The next year, she gave birth to Yang tingzhang, and Yang's family gradually prospered.
