DAHAO ancient city is located in Haojiang District of Shantou City. It is the only well preserved pocket ancient city in China, with an area of only 0.014 square kilometers.

The ancient city was built in 1717 (the 56th year of the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty). It is the only well preserved pocket ancient city in China. DAHAO ancient city is rectangular. DAHAO ancient city wall was listed in the Sixth Batch of cultural relics protection units of Guangdong Province in 2010.

Historical evolution

In ancient times, DAHAO was the political, military and economic management center of the recruiting capital. In the west of the city, there is a "Navy Zuoying garrison house", which is equivalent to the regiment level military headquarters; in the East, there is a "Zhaoning Department inspection office", which is the Public Security Bureau; in the north, there is a "recruitment salt farm", which is equivalent to the salt bureau. The East and West and North three organizations form a zigzag layout. During the period of the Republic of China, the "Inspection Office of Zhaoning Department" was changed to "DAHAO police station". After 1918, Qunying and Shengde primary schools were built in the city. There were dozens of residents in the city, most of whom were descendants of officials from laihao in the former Qing Dynasty. In 1939, the Japanese army occupied DAHAO, drove all the residents out of the city, and demolished the houses, making it an empty city.

DAHAO was called the recruiting capital in ancient times. There are many mountains and few fields, and the people are engaged in fishing and salt. According to the historical records, "Tian San, Yu Yan Qi" refers to the production layout at that time. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, Yang Lin, governor of Guangdong and Guangxi, went to the imperial court to ask for permission to build a city wall along the coast of DAHAO to defend against the harassment of the remaining parties and Pirates of the Ming Dynasty. At that time, the local official surnamed Xu Mingying felt that it was not convenient for the fishermen who worked by the tide to go in and out of the city. Secondly, the residents who were engaged in fishing and salt industry lived in extreme poverty, had food and clothing, and had no worries about property robbery. It was really a waste of money to build urban construction projects. But if you don't build a city, it's hard to explain to your boss. So, he came up with a way to deal with it, built a recruitment City, and built a long dike of more than 20 miles according to the environment near DAHAO fish island, so that the local residents were free from the flood.

DAHAO is a square city with a wall of 5.3 meters high and 1.35 meters thick. There are battlements on the top of the wall. The lower part of the city wall was built with stones, and the upper part was rammed with shell ash, coarse sand and clay. The east gate is called "Dashan gate" and the west gate is called "Xihao gate". It is a stone arch with a height of 3 meters, a width of 4.5 meters and a thickness of 4.3 meters. It turns out that there are towers on the city gate, high walls full of gun holes on the outside, and double eaves and three Bay hall on the inside. The four corners of the city are built with lookout platforms, among which the southeast corner platform is the largest, covering an area of more than 200 square meters. From the east gate to the west gate, there is a road about 100 meters long and 3 meters wide, which is the only street in the town.
