history
150 years ago, when the colonists set foot on this strange land of Shanghai, they took a fancy to this beach of Huangpu River. So, this was once the path of boatman and laborer. After more than 100 years of construction, there are many tall buildings and lots of traffic. These classical and modernist buildings have become the symbols of Shanghai.
The Bund, north from Wai Bai Du bridge, South to Jinling East Road, a total length of about 1.5 kilometers, the east side of the Huangpu River, the west side is 52 different styles of buildings, the essence of the Bund lies in these are known as the "World Architecture Expo" the Bund building complex. The famous Bank of China building, Peace Hotel, customs building and HSBC building reproduce the style of "Far East Wall Street" in the past. Although these buildings are not from the same designer or built in the same period, their architectural colors are basically unified, and the overall contour treatment is surprisingly coordinated. You can feel a kind of vigorous, vigorous, graceful and magnificent momentum no matter you look far away or stroll around.
The Bund used to be the beach along the river to the north of Chengxiang, Shanghai. In the old days, it was commonly known as "Huangpu Beach". After the road was built, it was named Huangpu Road, and in 1945 it was renamed zhongshangdong 1st road.
After 1840, Shanghai, as one of the five trading ports, began to open to the outside world. In 1845, British colonists seized the Bund and established the British concession. In 1849, French colonists also seized the Bund and established the French concession. From then on to the early 1940s, the Bund was occupied by the British concession and the French concession, and was called "the Bund of the British concession" and "the Bund of France" respectively. The Ministry of industry of the public concession and the Council of the French Concession are their highest municipal organizations and leading bodies respectively. The concession is like a sovereign area, and the Western powers operate and manage it in their way. With the construction of the concession, the Bund became the earliest and most prosperous place in the concession. In the early days, the Bund was a center of foreign trade, where there were many foreign companies and trade flourished. Since the late 19th century, many foreign and Chinese banks have been established on the Bund, which has become Shanghai's "Financial Street" and also known as "Oriental Wall Street". As a result, the Bund has become a "geomantic treasure land". Owning a piece of land on the Bund is not only a symbol of wealth, but also a symbol of reputation. After commercial banks and financial enterprises occupied a place in the Bund, they built the company building. Most of the buildings on the Bund have been rebuilt for three or more times. Architects from all over the world have shown their skills here, making the Bund, which is not large in area, gather more than 20 buildings of different periods, different countries and different styles. Therefore, the Bund is also known as the "World Architecture Expo". For more than a hundred years, the Bund has always appeared in front of the world as a symbol of Shanghai.
After the opening up of Shanghai in 1843, the first British Consul in Shanghai, Balfour, took a fancy to the Bund area. In 1845, according to the so-called "Shanghai land charter" published by Shanghai Daotai, 800 mu of land including the Bund was designated as the British concession. In 1849, France also designated 986 mu of land on the south side of the British concession as the French concession. However, it was not until the beginning of the last century, especially in the 1920s and 1930s, that the towering World Architecture Exhibition complex, which stands on the river, was built. From this period, it gradually became the symbol of the largest economic center in the Far East. After a hundred years of history and vicissitudes, the Bund has been renovated on a large scale from 1992 to 1993. The old look has changed into a new one and the scenery has become more attractive. It has been rated as the "favorite scenic spot" by Chinese and foreign tourists in Shanghai.
changes
There are 23 houses in the Bund. From the opening of Shanghai to the formation of today's pattern, it has experienced three large-scale architectural changes.
The first stage was in the middle and lower part of the 19th century (1843-1895). In 1843, Jardine Matheson took the lead in renting land at the intersection of Beijing on the Bund. In the second year of Yue Dynasty, it built a two-story building integrating residence and office. By the 29th year of Daoguang, from Yangjingbang to Beijing Road, 11 foreign firms had built similar buildings on the Bund. Most of these brick and wood buildings were British rural buildings, or East Indian buildings with wide inner corridor balcony (coupon corridor). During the 1860s and 1980s, a number of buildings imitated the Renaissance style appeared. By the end of the 19th century, the buildings on the Bund had been built one after another. In this period, only the original British Consulate No. 33 remains.
The second stage is at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century (1895-1919). With the rise of land price and the introduction of new materials such as cement, about half of the Bund buildings have been rebuilt, using reinforced concrete structures, ranging from three or four floors to six or seven floors. In the architectural style, there is a compromise form of transition to the modern architectural form. Huizhong hotel has installed the earliest elevator in Shanghai. There are 10 buildings in this stage.
The third stage is from 1920 to 1937. Qiahe, HSBC, jianghaiguan, Shaxun and other 11 buildings were converted into high-rise buildings. The new building is characterized by large volume, with almost half of the high-rise buildings above 8 stories. The architectural form appeared the early modernist style with simple facade, many of which were luxurious in style, magnificent in decoration, and more perfect in facilities. The earliest building in Shanghai (HSBC) used heating and cooling equipment. At this stage, except for the Bank of communications building, which was built in 1948, today's Bund building pattern was basically formed.
characteristic
The Bund is a landmark scenic spot in Shanghai. You must visit the Bund when you go to Shanghai. Otherwise, you will not have been to Shanghai. Its overall layout can be summarized in five lines
1. World Architecture Expo Group (there are 26 Chinese and foreign buildings on this road, forming a beautiful landscape)
2. The 10 Lane East Zhongshan Road runs through the traffic in all directions.
3. The Bund green, city sculptures, fountains.
4. Pudong New Lujiazui financial and trade zone.
5. Bund lover's wall
It is suggested that you start from the Bund of Nanjing Road, walk south along the Bund building to Yan'an East Road, cross the underground sidewalk of Guangdong Road, then board the riverside sightseeing platform to the Bund Park, and return to the Bund building side from the underpass of Beijing East Road.
The Bund, also known as zhongshangdong 1st Road, is about 1.5 km long. Facing Huangpu River in the East and 52 buildings with different styles, such as Gothic, Roman, Baroque, Chinese and western wall style, in the west, are known as the "World Architecture Expo Group". Huangpu River is the largest river flowing through Shanghai. The source of Huangpu River is located in Longwangshan nature reserve, Anji, Zhejiang Province. As the Huangpu River is connected to the sea, it is affected by tides. On average, there are obvious rising and falling tides twice a day. The water level drop in a day can reach more than 4 meters. In case of astronomical spring tide, the water level drop will be even greater. One hundred and fifty years ago, Shanghai was only a medium-sized County along the coast of the south of the Yangtze River. The shipping industry was very underdeveloped, and people did not have the necessity or ability to build embankments along the river. Therefore, most of the river banks were natural beaches except the Huangpu River bank in Dongmen. At ebb tide, the river water stagnates in the center of the riverbed, exposing a large area of beach. At high tide, the river never crossed the bank. Huangpu River is the main channel of Shanghai. Because the river is wide and the water is fast, ships going against the river have to pull their boats. For hundreds of years, the track of the trackers has stepped on a winding path on the Huangpu River beach, which is known as the "trackway", which is the earliest Road on the Bund.
The Bund is on the Bank of Huangpu River in Shanghai. It represents the scenery of Shanghai and is a must visit tourist destination of Shanghai. In the late 19th century, many foreign banks on the Bund were established in the Bund, which is known as Shanghai's "Finance Street" or "Oriental Wall Street". Therefore, the Bund has become a place to encourage financial investment. Due to the historical value of the Bund, owning a small piece of land on the Bund is not only a sign of wealth, but also a sign of honor. Huangpu beach from Baidu bridge to East Jinling Road is known as "Bund" because it is located outside the city of Shanghai
