The former site of Soochow University, located at No. 1 Shizi street, was listed as a cultural relic protection unit of Suzhou City in 1991. In 1871, the American Council of Christian supervisors set up a conservatory college in Shiquan Street, Suzhou. In 1879, it moved to tiancizhuang and changed its name to Boxi college. It was incorporated into the Chinese and Western academies. In the 27th year, Zhongxi academy moved to the former site of tiancizhuang Boxi academy and established Soochow University, or Soochow University, which became one of the early Christian Universities in China. After the revolution of 1911, it was renamed Soochow University. At the beginning, there were only middle school classes with less than 100 students. The former site of Soochow University covers an area of about 60000 square meters, with a total construction area of 21000 square meters. The main buildings are distributed in the north, West and east of the lawn playground. Among them are the bell tower forest hall, which was built in the center of the school in the autumn of 27th and the spring of 29th of the Qing Dynasty; the library sun hall, which was built in the autumn of the first year of Xuantong and completed in three years; the science museum Ge hall, which was built in the autumn of 1924; the student dormitory Weige hall, which was built in 1934; the student dormitory Zishi hall, which was built in 1935; and the Jianshen room, which was built in 1936. These buildings have different styles, either as European classical style, or imitating medieval castle style, or following American church style. They are diverse and unified, and still keep their original appearance. In addition, in the north, there are a row of six small buildings parallel to the school gate. Some of them are western American houses. They were built successively from the 33rd year of Guangxu to 1919. At that time, they were all senior staff. In the west of Zhu, there is a five story building, which was built in 1936 as a female dormitory. The former site of Soochow University is adjacent to the inner city river of Fengmen in the East, facing the ancient city wall across the river.
