Xuntang ancient town

Xuntang river is surrounded by water on three sides. The buildings in the ancient town are antique and full of the flavor of traditional Jiangnan Water Town. Xuntang old street is beside Xuntang river bend, surrounded by water on three sides, like a peninsula, joined by five bridges.

Xuntang ancient town

Xuntang ancient town was built in 1913 in Xuntang village, Huazhuang Town, Binhu District. At that time, Qian fengshu, the administrative director of Xin'an Township, initiated the construction and planning along the river to facilitate the local people's shopping. The town was located on the Bank of Xuntang River and surrounded by water on three sides, so it was named "Xuntang town". It was one of the important historical towns in Wuxi at that time. It was an important transportation route connecting Huazhuang, Xuelang, Dafu and Nanquan. Historical evolution

The history of Xuntang can be traced back to the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period. At that time, the big rivers here included liangtang, Xuntang and Yuantang. In Wuxi dialect, "Tang" is a artificially trimmed river course and a part of water conservancy project.

Before the Yuan Dynasty, a bridge was built on the Xuntang river. The single hole stone arch bridge was rebuilt in the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1888). It spans from north to South and is made of Jinshan stone. It is 17.2 meters long and 5 meters long. It has four bridge ears. The bridge deck is made of stepping stones. The approach bridge is in the shape of "eight characters". The Longmen stone on the bridge is carved with "Ruyi water ripple". There are two steles on the inner wall of the bridge, which record the name of the reconstruction of Xuntang bridge and the name of the donor. The arch system is of longitudinal connection, segmented and parallel structure, and the bridge arch is engraved with the bridge connection: "in the ancient times, there was a lying rainbow in the stream, and now the title column is Huai Sima.". The two beams on the bridge are engraved with the six words "rebuilding the ancient Xuntang bridge", which has been 120 years. The stone steps of Xuntang bridge are very low, only 5-10 cm high. The designer may consider it convenient for passers-by to walk. Therefore, it is especially suitable for the elderly and children to walk, and it can really save a lot of effort for those who are carrying a heavy load to cross the bridge.
