Six Dynasties pine

The Six Dynasties pine is a cypress tree located in the northwest corner of the four archways campus of Southeast University. It is said that it is a relic of the Six Dynasties more than 1500 years ago, so it is named. It is said that emperor Liang Wu planted the tree in the palace. After the Sui army destroyed Chen, the palace of kangchengyi was completely destroyed. However, the tree has survived the war. The Imperial Academy of Ming Dynasty was built on the former site of the Southern Dynasty palace where the Six Dynasties pine was located. In the early years of the Republic of China, Liangjiang Normal School was established on the former site of the Ming Imperial College, which became the origin of the National Central University. Therefore, the Six Dynasties pine has become a symbol of the Southern Dynasty culture which has been spreading for thousands of years.

Liuchaosong is a thousand year old tree with a history of more than 1600 years. It is located in the northwest corner of Sipailou campus of Southeast University. It stands on the south side of mei'an, protected by two layers of iron fence, with thick iron poles on both sides. From a distance, it looks like a stubborn old man on crutches. Close to a look, there are two small steel pipes and three iron rings supporting it together, the steel pipe straight into the trunk, revealing the dark hole in the tree, people can not help but panic. Standing by the fence, I leaned over and looked closely, and found that the bark of the ancient tree had split, and the middle was gray. The inside of the trunk of the ancient tree has been dead, and nutrients are transported completely by the bark outside. In order to support the trunk, the inside of the ancient tree is hollowed out and poured with sand and stone. This ancient tree looks very old. Its whole body is supported. Its skin is mottled and its growth is declining. But surprisingly, the crown of the ancient tree is still green, showing a magical vitality. Although its crown is low, it always stretches forward, as if unwilling to lose fighting spirit.

It grows on neutral soil, calcareous soil and slightly acidic soil. It is also cultivated in many places. It likes light trees, warm and cool climate and moist soil.

Among the ancient trees in Nanjing, the pines of the Six Dynasties are known as "the oldest", which were planted by Emperor Wu of Liang Dynasty. According to textual research, the pines of the Six Dynasties are not far from the yanzhijing, where "the ancient battlements smoke buries the palace well trees, and the Chen Lord Wu Ji falls to the spring". It was the central area of the palace in the Six Dynasties, belonged to the Imperial Academy in the Ming Dynasty, and later became the campus of Southeast University. In the center of the palace garden during the Six Dynasties, the gardens were excellent. There is no way to verify the authenticity of the legend. However, according to the speculation of landscape experts, the pine trees of the Six Dynasties are indeed over 1000 years old, which is a rare "living fossil". It witnessed the historical changes of the ancient capital Nanjing, the completion of Zhaoming Wenxuan, the compilation of Yongle Dadian, the rise and fall of Liangjiang Normal School and the hundred year history of Southeast University. The gymnasium beside it was built in 1923, where British philosopher Russell, American educator Dewey and Indian poet Tagore all gave speeches. Today, the song of the Six Dynasties has become the "spiritual totem" in the mind of master Dong.

According to the inscriptions on the left front of the ancient trees, the famous foresters Ma Dapu and Huang Baolong have made a taxonomic identification of the ancient trees and pointed out that the "Six Dynasties pine" is not a pine tree, but a juniper. Therefore, the accurate name of this famous "Six Dynasties pine" should be "Six Dynasties cypress".

Juniper, also known as juniper, juniper, is a long green tree, similar in shape to pine. The difference between juniper and pine lies in their leaves. Pine leaves are needle like, while juniper leaves are round though they are small and narrow. It is said that in ancient times, pine and cypress were not distinguished in many places. No wonder there was a long-term fallacy of "referring to cypress as pine".

The site was only ten meters away from the Six Dynasties pine, which was strongly opposed by master Dong and some Nanjing citizens. After thousands of years of growth, the root system of the Six Dynasties pine has already penetrated into the soil within tens of meters underground. The underground construction of the toilet is bound to damage the root system of the ancient trees. Moreover, if the septic tank is not tight enough and a large amount of material infiltrates into the soil, it will inevitably change the nutritional level and nature of the soil, which is also fatal to the fragile Six Dynasties pine. Finally, the relevant departments listened to the voice of protecting the Six Dynasties pines and decided to relocate the site to build toilets.
