Shen Yanyi Memorial

Shen Yanyi memorial hall is located in the former site of Gulou office in the old town of Gaizhou City, Yingkou City, Liaoning Province.

Mr. Shen Yanyi was born on December 21, 1903 in the East Tutai village of GAIPING county (now Gaizhou city), Liaoning Province. He is one of the few calligraphers in China. October 25, 2003 is Shen's centenary birthday. Gaizhou city decided to build Shen Yanyi Memorial Hall.

Introduction to the memorial

Shen Yanyi Memorial covers an area of 1311 square meters and a building area of 590 square meters. After the completion of the memorial hall, there are four pavilions, including the bronze statue of Mr. Shen, the inscriptions of celebrities from all walks of life, the photos and relics of Mr. Shen, and the authentic calligraphic works of Mr. Shen which are famous all over the country and the world. More than 2000 cultural relics of Gaizhou city will also be displayed here.

On the front door of the memorial hall is an inscription by Shen Peng, the current chairman of the calligrapher Association of China, "Shen Yanyi Memorial Hall". On October 25, 2003, on the 100th birthday of Mr. Shen Yanyi, Shen Yanyi Memorial Hall officially opened.

About Shen Yanyi

Shen Yanyi (1903-1992) was born on December 21, 1903 in Tutai village, east of GAIPING county (now Gaizhou city), Liaoning Province. Shen Tang, his father, was a tribute to the late Qing Dynasty. He was good at poetry and calligraphy, and had a high reputation in the local area. Shen Yanyi studied history from his father when he was young. He wrote poems and calligraphy. When he was weak, his literary talent and book title had already been praised in his hometown. He studied in the Republic of China University and Peking University. After graduation, he first worked in the Daoyin Office of Jilin Province, and then in the Middle East Railway Supervision Department of Mo Dehui. After the restoration, he was the director of the Secretariat of the Northeast production administration. After liberation, he was a researcher of Liaoning Provincial Museum and director of Shenyang Municipal Museum of culture and history. During the "Cultural Revolution", they were transferred to rural areas and settled in line. In 1978, he returned to the city after implementing the policy. He served as a member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC Liaoning Provincial Committee, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC Shenyang Municipal Committee, chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Calligraphy Association, chairman of the Liaoning Provincial Calligraphers Association, honorary director of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, and consultant of the Chinese poetry society. He made great contributions to the literature and history research and social public interests in Liaoning and Shenyang. He died in Shenyang on February 23, 1992 at the age of 89.

The origin of the Museum

Shen Yanyi, born in Gaizhou, Liaoning Province, is a famous contemporary calligrapher, poet and patriot. He is one of the few great calligraphers in China. According to the municipal Party committee and government of Gaizhou, Mr. Shen, as a contemporary cultural celebrity and a giant in the book industry, is well-known both at home and abroad and among the local people. He is the representative of the outstanding children of Gaizhou and the pride of the people of Gaizhou. Therefore, the construction of Shen Yanyi memorial hall is the image project of strengthening the city with culture, and it is also the front of patriotism and hometown education for the citizens.

The site of Shen Yanyi memorial hall has been selected several times, and it is located at the former site of the old building office in the center of Gaizhou ancient city. It is connected with the God Temple, the bell and Drum Tower, and the ancient buildings of Ming and Qing Dynasties, which constitute the unique scenery of Gaizhou. The Museum covers a total area of 1311 square meters, with a construction area of 590 square meters. In order to show Mr. Shen's life and work, Ms. Liu Ping, the former bookboy of Mr. Shen, was specially employed as the deputy curator of the museum. In an interview with reporters, Ms. Liu Ping said that Mr. Shen Yanyi is knowledgeable and talkative. He likes farm food very much, and is especially willing to eat millet, sharp pear and small fish and shrimp from his hometown. He is upright and stubborn, but his thoughts of patriotism and love for his hometown are often expressed and impressive.

The leader of the Propaganda Department of the CPC Gaizhou Municipal Committee told reporters that October 25 this year is the centenary of Mr. Shen Yanyi's birthday. Therefore, the city of Gaizhou decided to officially open the memorial on this day.

Brief introduction to the museum site

Shen Yanyi memorial hall is located in the former site of Gulou office in the old town of Gaizhou. The original site of the memorial hall is "the old house of Zang family", which has a history of 150 years. It is the ancestral home of Zang Rongtao's family. He lives in Hong Kong. After liberation, Zang Rongtao entrusted his son Zang Wenchang to donate the courtyard to the people's Government of Gaizhou city. Since then, it has been an office of governments at all levels. In 2002, the municipal government decided to change it into Shen Yanyi Memorial Hall.

Built in the early years of the Republic of China, the memorial hall has the architectural style of southern Liaoning, simple and elegant, rigorous structure, reasonable layout and fine workmanship. It is one of the most complete residential buildings in Gaizhou. It covers an area of 1400 square meters, with 7 main rooms and 7 gatehouses, 5 East rooms and 5 West rooms. After renovation, the architectural style of the Republic of China was restored. It is now a cultural relic protection unit at the city (county) level.

Interview with Liu Ping, deputy curator

Liu Ping, 36, is the deputy curator of Shen Yanyi Memorial Hall. She once worked as a bookboy for Shen Yanyi. Recalling her experience as a bookboy for Mr. Shen, the quiet and elegant lady said that before he died, Mr. Shen was the director of Shenyang Municipal Museum of literature and history and the chairman of Liaoning Calligrapher Association. She said that Shen was very willing to eat Gaizhou millet and jianba pear. Shen lived a simple life and had a wide range of knowledge. She not only prepares ink, pen and paper for Shen Lao every day, but also takes care of Shen Lao's life. Shen Lao never asks for money to write for himself.

Shen Yanyi's calligraphy style

According to reports, when Shen Yanyi was 7 years old, he visited Kang Youwei with his father on Bangchui island in Dalian, and his later calligraphy style inherited Kang Youwei's style to varying degrees.
