Historical story
The annals of Zhuluo County in the Qing Dynasty describe Alishan as "ten miles away from the county, the mountain is wide and deep..." The name of Mt. Ali is not clearly indicated. On the other hand, according to Japanese Abe Mingyi's book "Research on the place names of Taiwan", the book thinks that the pronunciation of Zhuluo Pingpu People is similar to that of Fengshan Pingpu People. Fengshan Pingpu People call the Shengfan of Alishan area "karii", which spread to Zhuluo Pingpu People and mispronounced as "ARII".
In February 1899, the Changping family of Shitian, Jiayi office, visited and discovered the cypress primeval forest in Alishan.
On June 12, 1900, the Japanese government sent Konishi Chengzhang, Yoshiro Ogasawara, mikuro Kochi and Ishida Changping to investigate the forest in Mt. Ali. According to the survey, there are about 300000 original cypress trees throughout the whole Mt. Ali, thus starting the origin of natural forest resources in Mt. Ali. In November 1906, tojiro Ogasawara discovered the Shenmu group including the present-day Alishan Shenmu. In September 1945, the Second World War ended. On October 25, Taiwan was restored. Japan returned Taiwan to China. After more than 30 years of logging work in Alishan business district, the natural red cypress, Sabina and other precious tree species were almost completely cut down.
In 1963, in order to protect natural resources, the Forestry Bureau designated more than 39600 hectares of "state-owned" forest land in Alishan and Yushan as "Alishan Forest Recreation Area" and drew up a plan to budget for renovation and maintenance year by year.
In 1975, the Taiwan Provincial Government renamed "Alishan scenic area" as "Alishan Forest Recreation Area".
On March 1, 1976, the "Executive Yuan" of the Taiwan authorities approved the "Alishan Forest Recreation Area Plan" covering an area of 175 hectares. On November 9 of the same year, a forest fire broke out in Alishan, burning down most of the shops, dwellings and hotels in front of Maoping railway station. According to the approved plan of Alishan Forest Recreation Area, the old community in the burned area was changed into a "natural park" (today's Plum Garden), with flowers and trees planted and footpaths built for public recreation. According to the Alishan reconstruction plan, the victims moved to the fourth lane (today's Zhongzheng village shop brigade community, Zhongshan village residential area, etc.), and the forest service bureau built shops, hotels and houses. According to the provisions of the Alishan reconstruction plan, they were rented and resettled. The staff of the forest Service Bureau were allocated to the dormitory in Xianglin village.
In 1995, the Taiwan Provincial Government approved the "Alishan Forest Recreation Area Plan", covering an area of 1400 hectares, which is managed by the Jiayi Forest Management Office of the forestry bureau
