Hengshan Reservoir
Hengshan Reservoir is located 5km south of Hunyuan County in Shanxi Province, at the foot of Hengshan Mountain in Beiyue, and on Tangyu River, a tributary of Hunhe River upstream of Sanggan River. With a total storage capacity of 13.3 million cubic meters, the design flood control standard is once in 100 years. It is a medium-sized water conservancy project with flood control as the main purpose and comprehensive utilization of irrigation as well. The reservoir grade is grade III, and the main building grade is grade 2.
General situation of reservoir
Hengshan Reservoir

Main works
The main structures of Hengshan Reservoir include dam, spillway and spillway. The dam is a concrete double curvature thin arch dam, which is the first experimental arch dam in China, and has attracted the attention of several generations of water conservancy experts. The dam of the reservoir was built in 1958 after four years. Completed in 1962. The dam is 69 meters high, 150 meters long and 2.5 meters wide at the top. It spans Tianfeng and Cuiping mountains. It is like a giant steel arm stretching out from Tianfeng and Cuiping mountains. It cuts off the water from the canyon into the dam and forms an artificial lake with a total capacity of more than 10 million cubic meters. Tangyu River can no longer be fierce, only obediently listen to the people's dispatch.
Current situation of reservoir
Hengshan Reservoir has been in operation for more than 40 years since its impoundment in 1966. The main problems are as follows: the flood control of the reservoir is not up to the standard, the anti sliding stability of the left dam abutment does not meet the specification requirements, and there are safety problems; there are many cracks in the dam body, and the concrete surface is seriously eroded; the dam observation equipment is old and aging; the gate and hoist are old and in disrepair, and the operation is not flexible, etc We are going to repair the dangerous reservoir. Because the dam of the reservoir is close to the Xuankong Temple, a tourist holy land, and the safety and environmental problems are prominent, a series of problems are put forward for the design of the reinforcement project of the reservoir. In the preliminary design of Hengshan Reservoir Reinforcement Project, the new technologies proposed by the Institute of structural materials, China Academy of water resources and hydropower Sciences, such as the reinforcement technology of support behind the dam, the self compacting rockfill concrete technology, the controlled blasting technology consistent with the environmental vibration, the upstream dam surface spray polyurea elastomer anti-seepage and so on, have been unanimously affirmed by the experts of Shanxi Province and the IOC. The project started construction on December 31, 2008, with a construction period of three years. Our institute has completed the technical construction design of all 5 bidding sections, all bidding sections have been started, and 50% of the self compacting rockfill concrete pouring quantity of the support body behind the dam has been completed. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.
Reasons for construction
Tangyu River in Jinlong gorge originates from Hengshan Mountains. Most of the flowing areas are soft sandstone, and the destruction of wars and man-made destruction in the past dynasties has reduced the forest coverage area of Hengshan day by day, resulting in serious soil erosion. Tangyu river carries a large amount of sediment to flow through the canyon, making the riverbed more silted and higher, gradually forming a situation of "river flowing in the sky", which is more than 50 meters higher than Hunyuan county and the surrounding villages and fields! Whenever heavy rain comes, the floods in longpenyu, Zhenggu, diaowanggu and other gullies in the upper reaches of Tangyu River dive down the steep mountains and finally gather in the narrow Jinlong gorge, rush out of the gorge and submerge the villages and fields outside the mountain. There have been countless floods in history, and Hunyuan city has become a city in water many times. However, in the long dry season, the river bed was so much higher than the ground that it could not be drained and irrigated, so the river had to be allowed to flow in vain. In the past, Tangyu river had a hundred disadvantages but no advantages. In order to eradicate the flood of Tangyu River, Hengshan Reservoir should be built at shimenyukou.
Hengshan Reservoir and Xuankong Temple
Xuankongsi is located in the dam area of Hengshan Reservoir, only 150m away from the dam. Xuankong Temple was built in the 15th year of Taihe (491 A.D.) in the Northern Wei Dynasty. At the beginning of its construction, Xuankong Temple was 80 meters away from the bottom of the valley. Later, due to the siltation of the river bed over the years, the temple was only 58 meters away from the bottom of the valley. In the past two years, the management department of Hengshan scenic area, in combination with the application for world heritage, has vigorously carried out comprehensive environmental treatment for Xuankong Temple, demolished more than 300 meters of water conveyance waste canal of Hengshan Reservoir, removed the engineering waste residue left over by the construction of Hengshan Reservoir and Hengshan tunnel, and removed 200000 cubic meters of river bed silt over the years. The height of Xuankong Temple from the valley bottom has been "returned" to 80 meters. The restoration of the historical height of 80 meters from the bottom of the valley highlights the "hanging" feature of the ancient temple. Although Xuankong Temple lives in deep valley, it is close to Hengshan Reservoir. More than 50000 mu of good farmland is irrigated by the impoundment of Hengshan Reservoir. In summer, green hills stand on both sides, and the dark mountains are reflected in the reservoir. The water is green and rippled. When the spillway gate is fully opened, the flying current gushes in the gorge, and the mountains and rivers intersect and become an integral whole. The spectacle of jiexuankong Temple adds beauty.
