Guangzhou Academy of fine arts was founded in 1953, formerly known as Zhongnan Academy of fine arts. It was located in Wuchang, Hubei Province. In the autumn of 1958, it moved to Guangzhou and officially renamed Guangzhou Academy of fine arts.

Historical evolution
In the autumn of 1953, with the approval of the Ministry of higher education, the fine arts departments (departments) of Zhongnan College of literature and art (Hubei), South China People's College of literature and art (Guangdong) and Guangxi Academy of Arts (Guangxi) merged to form "Zhongnan Academy of fine arts", which is located in Wuhan, Hubei Province.
In 1958, with the approval of the State Council, Zhongnan Academy of fine arts moved to Guangzhou and changed its name to Guangzhou Academy of fine arts.
In 1966, when the "Cultural Revolution" broke out, the school was forced to stop running.
In 1970, Guangzhou Academy of fine arts, Guangzhou Conservatory of music and Guangdong dance school merged to form Guangdong People's Academy of art.
In 1978, Guangdong People's Academy of Art (formerly part of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts) was restored to Guangzhou Academy of fine arts.
In 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the University was granted the first batch of master's degree granting rights in China.
In 1986, the school was allowed to enroll continuing education students.
In 1987, the University was allowed to recruit foreign students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
In 2004, the university built a new campus in Guangzhou University City. In September of the same year, all the undergraduate education moved to Guangzhou University Town, thus forming a pattern of "one school, two districts".
In 2005, the University was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as the only experimental unit of master of Arts (MFA) in South China.
In 2006, he was selected into the National College Students' cultural quality education base.
In 2010, the University was identified as the provincial doctoral program construction unit in Guangdong Province.
In June 2017, the Guangdong Provincial Academic Degrees Committee announced the list of construction units for awarding doctoral and master's degrees in 2017, and Guangzhou Academy of fine arts was selected.
In May 2018, Guangzhou Academy of fine arts signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Guangdong Art Museum.

Art design
