Jianghan Road is located in the center of Hankou. It starts from Yanjiang Avenue in the south, runs through Zhongshan Avenue and Jinghan Avenue, and ends at Jiefang Avenue in the north, with a total length of 1600 meters. With a width of 10 to 25 meters, it is a famous century old commercial street in Wuhan.

Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street

Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street is the longest pedestrian street in China, with the reputation of "the first pedestrian street in the world". It is located in the central area of Hankou, Wuhan City, Hubei Province. It starts from Yanjiang Avenue in the south, runs through Zhongshan Avenue and Jinghan Avenue, and ends at Jiefang Avenue in the north, with a total length of 1600 meters. On December 28, 2016, it took two years to construct. After reconstruction, Jianghan Road and Zhongshan Avenue showed a new look.

Among the 4.7 km reconstruction of Zhongshan Avenue, Jianghan Road is the most eye-catching project. Founded in 1906, Zhongshan Avenue, with a history of 110 years, is the most important commercial trunk road in laohankou. Jianghan Road runs through Metro Line 2 and line 6 simultaneously, and Zhongshan Avenue incarnates into a landscape Avenue integrating commercial culture and customs, gradually catching up with the international famous commercial Avenue.

Historical evolution

Following the September 1999 Beijing's 700 year old Wangfujing and the 150 year old Nanjing Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, one year after the street opened, in September 22, 2000, a Wuhan flower market with nearly 100 years of history was also walking into the waltz of the city pedestrian street with a charming appearance and personality. So far, Wangfujing in Beijing, Nanjing Road in Shanghai, Heping Road in Tianjin, central street in Harbin and Jianghan Road in Wuhan have become the "five golden flowers" of China's metropolises.

Architectural features

Walking along Jianghan Road, the buildings built by the Bank of Taiwan, the Bank of Shanghai and the Bank of Qing are marvellous with exquisite ornaments, beautiful lines, richness and neatness. In Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street, you can also appreciate another style -- modern architecture full of simplicity, purity and smooth lines. Among them, Industrial Bank of China and Siming bank, which were built in 1934 and 1936 respectively, are the landmark works of Lu yongbiao. Siming bank was established in 1934. The whole building is light colored and tall. Even the doors and windows are made of thin black iron bars. The black marble exterior wall on the ground floor and the Chu red exterior wall on the middle and upper floors of CITIC Industrial Bank go straight to the spire. With a height of 48.5 meters, CITIC Industrial Bank has been the tallest building in decades. It is a model of modern architecture in Wuhan and a milestone.

The colorful buildings on Jianghan Road are second to none of the buildings in Shanghai village. They have red tiles, clear water walls, wooden windows and white chimneys. They are a school of modern European scenery. Through Zhongshan Avenue, Daqing bank and Hankou branch of Bank of China guard the intersection of Jianghan Road and Zhongshan Avenue. The bank building of Qing Dynasty was built in 1916. It is square, imposing and classic. Further on, the national product company building (today's Xuangong Hotel, central department store) has a continental style. It started in 1928, with a peculiar shape and an L-shape. Standing in Zhongbai square, looking up at the sky along Jianghan Road, the buildings are decorated with columns, curved corners, and open domed towers and pavilions, which break the straight roof of Chinese architecture and appear to be in disorder.

A total of 13 buildings on Jianghan Road are listed as excellent historical buildings, including one at the provincial level, six at the municipal level and six at the municipal level.

There are two landmarks on Jianghan Road, one at Jianghan pass and the other at Jianghan 4th road. The four white granite tightly clasp the base, representing the concentrated embodiment of politics, commerce, architecture and culture here. Two stainless steel solid triangles are geometrically superimposed to form a huge V shape in space, representing victory and hope. The irregular cracks on the triangle seem to tell the history of Jianghan Road, and indicate that there will be unprecedented fission of Jianghan Road. Road sign 2: located at Jianghan 4th road. It is composed of triangle gray marble as the base, four sand copper structures and staggered superimposed footings. The foot board directly shows the road itself - "walking" commercial street. At the same time, it also means that with the reform and development of the city, Jianghan Road, a century old street, is getting rid of all kinds of constraints, stepping into the international metropolis stage step by step and marching into the 21st century.

Commercial pedestrian street

At the end of February 2000, Wuhan municipal government decided to transform Jianghan Road into a pedestrian street, transforming this century old commercial street into a new commercial pedestrian street integrating boutique shopping and leisure tourism. The pedestrian street was officially opened on September 22, 2000. At that time, it became one of the most prosperous areas in Hankou. Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street was 1210 meters long, which was known as the longest pedestrian street in China.

In order to fully tap the potential of the century old commercial street and create a brand commercial street, there is no longer a "shoulder" on the roadside of Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street. Except for the financial industry, gold, silver and jewelry industry, other businesses remove the rolling gate doors and windows and install transparent floor type glass doors.

Planning and development

After reconstruction, Jianghan Road is divided into three sections: from jianghanguan to Poyang street, 400 meters away, forming a commercial section with financial industry and insurance industry as the main body. It is 510 meters away from Zhongshan Avenue to Jianghan Fourth Road, forming a comprehensive commercial district centered on modern large shopping malls such as central department store, new world department store center and Junhua mingpin Plaza. At the end of 1985, Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street area was named as "national civilized Commercial Street" by the Ministry of Commerce of the people's Republic of China.
