brief introduction
Except for the north section from Zhanqian to Shengli Park, which is 36 meters wide, Renmin Street is 54 meters wide, which is one of the widest streets in the urban area. The magnificent buildings, main parks and green spaces in the urban area are mostly on both sides of it. People's Square is the largest central square, connecting the main streets leading to all directions of the city.
Construction history
The construction of this street has lasted for one hundred years and gone through several different historical periods. As far back as 1907, after the Russo Japanese War, Japan seized the Nanman Railway (between Changchun and Dalian) from the Russians. In order to carry on the management to it, starts to have the plan the urban area construction. The land was purchased in Toudaogou, Changchun (near the present Changchun railway station), the Changchun railway station was built, and a street square with a diameter of 175 meters was built in front of the station. It was named "big square" at the beginning of construction, and then it was renamed "North Square" according to the orientation of all squares in Changchun at that time. A 900 meter long street was built from the south of the station, that is, the north section of Renmin Street (from the front of the station to the North) At the northeast corner of Shengli Park, along the north of Toudaogou, this section only accounts for one thirteenth of the whole street, which is the original prototype of Renmin Street. According to the Japanese plan at that time, Changchun Zhanqian to Qima road was planned as a "subsidiary place of Manchuria Railway".
At the time of planning and design, there were many iterations on the road width. The original design host was Kato Yukichi, head of civil engineering department and engineer of Manchurian Railway. According to the standards of Tokyo, Japan at that time, he designed the street with a width of only tens of meters, which was criticized by shinhei goto, the first president of Manchuria Railway. Kato once again proposed to widen the width to 28.8 meters, but he was reprimanded by goto, who sent him to Europe and America for investigation. Finally, the road width is 36 meters. Passenger and freight transportation was mainly in the era of carriage. According to the standards of Tokyo, Japan at that time, it was also the widest. After the completion of the road type, it was too empty for Changchun, which had only a few thousand people.
After the fall of Northeast China, Changchun became the center of Japanese imperialist rule in Northeast China, and the Japanese carried out large-scale urban planning and construction. In order to continue the completed "central link", as the longitudinal central trunk road of the urban area, it is decided to extend southward and named "Datong Street". From the south of Shengli park gate, the road width is expanded to 54 meters, divided into fast and slow lanes, and there are four green belts (also car belts) composed of roadside trees. Because the Japanese adopted the circular intersection system in planning, there are six circular squares on this street, which are not only the car return Island, but also the green space.
During the Japanese occupation period, the construction of the project was advanced from north to south. In the beginning, it crossed the Toudaogou, with a large amount of work, so in the 1930s, it used railway dumper, LHD and other advanced construction machinery, which was unprecedented at that time.
Generally speaking, the project started in 1932 and was built near the people's Square in 1933; it reached Jiefang intersection from 1935 to 1936; it reached the satellite intersection at the south end from 1937 to 1938; after 1939, there was no great change. The road section to the south of Gongnong square has only completed the fast lane without greening, and the sidewalk to the south of people's square has no pavement. The driveway adopts pouring asphalt pavement. Most of them are gravel foundation, and some of them are unreinforced concrete foundation. After 1941, because of the shortage of funds, the Japanese could only maintain the original state. Although this street first adopted the new technology of underground power and telecommunication lines, it was still an unfinished street until the surrender of Japanese imperialism. There are few buildings in the south of people's Square. In the north of people's Square, except for Sanchong department store (today's department store) and Japan Maozhi Co., Ltd. (today's Provincial Architectural Design Institute), most of them are office buildings of government offices and enterprises. Therefore, the Japanese call this Street "Office Street". Because this street concentrates banks and Japanese financial enterprises, the Japanese also call it "Manzhi Street" "Wall Street in Texas.".
When the main street was built, there were many villages along the way, such as xinfatun, chenghoupu, yihetun, fuantun, etc. the Japanese colonial authorities were eager to build roads and buildings, so they forced the villagers to demolish houses and occupied farmland, regardless of the life and death of the Chinese people, which made a large number of farmers displaced. When the "Datong square" and the office building of the puppet Ministry of Justice (now the office building of the Municipal Public Security Bureau) were built, some villagers were forced to hang themselves.
The Japanese originally planned to let this street lead directly to the South Ring Road, but the south end had to cross several deep gullies, such as Xiaobeigou. No matter how high the filling is or how to build the bridge, the engineering cost is very large. As a result, a road turning southwest had to be built to connect the road leading to the southern suburbs.
Original name
This street was first named "Changchun Street" by Japanese according to Chinese place names. In 1922, the Japanese colonial authorities changed the names of the streets and roads in the affiliated areas of the Manchurian Railway to Japanese names, so it was renamed "zhongyangtong", which means zhongyangdajie. The name of Beiduan was used until the surrender of Japanese imperialism in 1945.
After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, the Soviet Army stationed in Changchun, built an air force memorial tower in the center of the people's Square, and renamed the street Stalin street. After the Kuomintang occupied Changchun in May 1946, the street was divided into two sections, the north section was changed to Zhongshan street, the south section was changed to Zhongzheng Street according to the name of Chiang Kai Shek, and the central square was also changed to Zhongzheng square. In October 1948, the Chinese people's Liberation Army liberated Changchun. Since then, Changchun, a beautiful city, has returned to the hands of the people. In March 1949, in order to express the friendly relations between the Chinese people and the people of the Soviet Union, this street was named Stalin street after Stalin, the head of state of the Soviet Union. It was renamed Renmin Street on May 1, 1996.
