Site introduction
The former site of the naval Hotel, also known as the German Navy Club, is located at 17 Hubei Road, Shinan District, Qingdao City, Shandong Province, at the northeast corner of the intersection of Zhongshan Road and Hubei Road (the original feidieli street and yilienu Street). It was designed in 1899, started construction in may 1901 and completed the following year. It is one of the representative works of early German architecture in Qingdao. The architecture belongs to the German New Renaissance style, which is mainly manifested in the towering towers, the front and inside Gables across the main entrance and the wooden veranda.
history
The earliest owners of the building were the royal naval navy Hotel and some public welfare organizations. At that time, it was used as a place for soldiers and sailors to recuperate and stay. When it was completed, it had 40 rooms. Among the hotel and hotel buildings in Qingdao at that time, its construction age and scale were second only to Prince Henry Hotel on William's shore (now No. 29, Taiping Road, all the original buildings except the hotel department have been demolished). The site of the building may be close to the temporary trestle wharf, taking into account the factors that make it easy for ships to reach. However, with the opening of Dagang wharf and the development of the city, the surrounding area has been re planned as the center of European business district. Because the tower part has exceeded the "construction supervision police regulations" for Commercial Street on both sides of the building height limit provisions, become a very eye-catching commercial street landscape.
The last use of the building in Qingdao during the German occupation was a wartime temporary hospital, which was occupied by Japan in 1914 and used as a Japanese club the following year. Due to the distance between the building and the street, a part near Zhongshan Road was added. During the second reign of the national government in Qingdao, it was the US Navy Club. After 1949, it was successively used as the office building of the Qingdao Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and the Qingdao civil air defense office. Part of the building is still used by office units, and part is rented by enterprises and inhabited by residents. In addition to the reconstruction of the top of the tower, the building is basically in good condition.
Architecture
The building has three floors above ground and one underground. The first floor adopts stone brick wall, the second floor has colonial wooden column outline, the walls are painted with very light yellow, the roof is four slope type, covered with red tiles, and the sharp top tower at the corner of the road is the center of its elevation composition. The architectural form is light and lively, fluctuating and full of rhythm. However, there are few decorations, such as the semi wood structure decoration on the gable, the staggered truss decoration under the tower and the balustrade of the veranda.
The first large auditorium in Qingdao is located in the rear of the building. It is of brick and wood structure, about 14 meters wide and 20 meters deep. The plane is basilica style. The three walls of the auditorium are equipped with cloisters, with glass cover lamps and North window lighting. It can accommodate about 700 seats. It was one of the earliest film screening units in Qingdao, where various plays were regularly staged, such as films from Germany and other European countries.
