Baoyan Temple

Baoyan temple is located in Baoyan bay at the West foot of Yushan Mountain in Changshu City, Jiangsu Province. It was first built in the reign of Liang Tianjian (502 AD). It was formerly known as Yanfu temple. It was destroyed in Huichang of Tang Dynasty.

Temple History

In the second year of Duangong (990 AD) of the Northern Song Dynasty, after emperor he Rongming, the Buddhist monk of xibian, retired to the old temple, he built the Guangxia temple, which took five years to complete. At that time, a Qian family donated five hundred taels of gold to build a seven level Fu Tu (it is said that Si Zhou Seng Jia TA is the first, and this is the second), as well as doors, pavilions, towers, courtyards, halls, halls, walls and other buildings. High Gu Wang, Yi Shu scale extract, Hui Zhao can learn, will be strange set victory, shape can not be exhausted.

In Chunhua, Emperor Taizong of the middle Song Dynasty granted "Ji Jiu Zhang", "Xiao Yao Yong" and "Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang" to the temple. In the middle of emperor Tianxi of the Song Dynasty (1017 AD), it was changed to "Baoyan Chan Temple". In 1036, the temple was rebuilt. After the Southern Song Dynasty, the temples were destroyed. In the early Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1403 AD), the monks were rebuilt by Fazhen and later incorporated into Huiri temple.

During the Jiajing period, Baoyan temple was destroyed by Japanese pirates. The local people occupied it as a tomb. After several migrations, the site came into being. At that time, the monks zhiang built a small house near it to live, and raised money everywhere to rebuild the temple.

During the reign of Shunzhi and Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, the palace was added, and during the reign of Qianlong, Yao Dadong repaired it again. Since then, the original base of Baoyan temple has gradually become a cemetery. At the beginning of Xianfeng, there were only two floors of Shanmen, Neiguan road and the palace, and other buildings were destroyed. In Tongzhi, there were monks kuanzhao and Yiyue pools. They raised money from all sides and rebuilt Baoyan temple again. They built Daxiong hall, Tianwang hall, Guanyin hall and Wofo hall. There were buildings and Zhaitang on both sides. The main hall "puguangming hall" imitates the Tianning Temple in Changzhou, and the plaque is inscribed by the forest. During this period, Baoyan temple was full of incense, and there was an endless stream of eminent monks who came to the temple to teach and preach. Muru, a famous Buddhist monk, was once the abbot of Baoyan temple. He preached the Vajra Sutra here, and there was no empty seat. At that time, the temple was surrounded by trees, ancient trees, mountains on three sides and facing the lake on one side. Wang Bo Guang wrote a poem: "in the mirror of Pinghu, there are green peaks on the back. Go to Guo 20 Li, the splendor of Jinbi is surging. It's called Baohua mirror. It's a panoramic view of the sky and the earth. Who is pregnant with falling dust martingale, several want to recruit flying Luan. How can I live? The scenery is peaceful, and the boat has been sailing for several years, so I don't have to worry about it. When you feel happy by yourself, what can you do with wine? How to make green lotus? From the appropriate heart appearance, dust trace body two forget, Haoran heaven and earth. 」

During the cultural revolution, Baoyan temple was destroyed again.

Temple reconstruction

In 1999, the Baoyan management area of Yushan National Forest Industrial Park in Jiangsu Province started planning to rebuild the Baoyan temple. Baoyan temple is planned to be rebuilt with a construction area of 2198 square meters and an area of 7934 square meters. The total investment is estimated to be about 8 million yuan (about 970000 US dollars). The main hall, the Sutra Pavilion, the Guanyin hall, the Jade Buddha Hall, the heavenly king hall, the cupboard room and the mountain gate will be built gradually to form a magnificent Buddhist hall. The first phase of the project will be completed from June 2000 to July 2001. The main hall of Baoyan temple will be completed in three years.
