Shantou Library

Shantou library is a national first-class library and a key protection unit of ancient books in Guangdong Province. Located in the times square, block 11, Changping Road, Shantou City, Guangdong Province, the Library covers an area of 14.415 mu, with a total construction area of 28700 square meters. The main building has 14 floors, integrating reading, research, activities and leisure.

Shantou library has a designed collection of 1.5 million books. By the end of 2007, the library had 550000 books, more than 1200 newspapers and periodicals, and a number of audio-visual and electronic documents. In the collection, there are more than 10000 volumes of local literature, 20000 volumes of thread bound ancient books, and 11 ancient books such as Hongwu Zhengyun. The library has a daily capacity of 4000 person times, open for 63 hours a week, and provides 24-hour service through broadband network.

Architectural design

Shantou library is a national first-class library, located in the 11th block of Changping Road, Shantou City, covering an area of 14.415 mu, with a total construction area of 28700 square meters and a total investment of 125.8 million yuan. The main building has 14 floors, 13 floors above ground and 1 floor underground, with 47 parking spaces. It is a cultural activity place integrating reading, research, activities and leisure. Shantou library integrates borrowing, reading and collection, highlights the local characteristics of Chaoshan, and realizes multi-function, multi carrier, networking and intellectualization. The library is Shantou Literature Resource Center, information service center, social education center and librarianship center.

The architectural design concept of the new Shantou library is as follows: (1) the floor has reasonable function setting and flexibility. The design should meet the long-term vision and pay attention to the function scalability. （2） Consider the needs of special readers. Set up such as children's books reading, reading room for the disabled, etc. （3） Easy to use. The internal service facilities of the library should be designed in a clear context, so that readers can easily find bibliographic abstracts, cashier, terminal inquiry desk, etc. This is an effective measure for the open library to guide readers to control books.

In terms of business area setting, Shantou library has four individual characteristics: (1) "full open shelf" area design. Different from the "Book Standard" of traditional library architecture, Shantou library emphasizes the "human standard" of taking people as the center, and creates a reading environment of "people in books, books beside people". （2） "Big space" regional borrowing place. It is convenient for readers to communicate with books and librarians. （3） The characteristic design of "self study space". The floor glass design of 7 self-study classrooms is spacious and bright, and the layout design of two-layer separation reduces the influence of people flow and noise. （4） The functions of the lecture hall and exhibition hall are matched. To become a place for direct exchange of ideas and academic, and comprehensively improve the public service level of the library.

Historical evolution

Shantou library was founded on March 29, 1921. It was initially named "Shantou Municipal popular library". In October 1946, it was renamed "Shantou Zhongzheng library". After liberation, it was named "Shantou library". At the beginning of its construction, Shantou library was located at the bottom of a small residential building at the end of the commercial street in Shantou City. In May 1979, the construction of No. 125 waima Road, Shantou City Library started, and it was completed and opened on February 4, 1981. The Museum covers an area of 3600 square meters, with a construction area of 2650 square meters. The main building is four stories high. In 1994, Shantou Municipal Party committee and government decided to build a new library of Shantou City. The foundation of the new library was laid on June 18, 1995, and the main construction project of the new library was completed in October 1997. In 2002, Mr. Lin Baixin, a well-known Hong Kong Chaoji entrepreneur, honorary citizen of Shantou City and honorary president of Shantou Overseas Friendship Association, was enthusiastic about the cultural cause of his hometown and donated 40 million yuan (the actual donation was 43.14 million yuan). Shantou Municipal government invested 20 million yuan to complete the decoration of the new library. The new museum opened on December 16, 2006.

Collection works

Shantou library has a designed collection of 1.5 million books. By the end of 2007, the library had a collection of 550000 books, more than 1200 newspapers and periodicals. In addition, there are 100 kinds of Oscar classic films, 100 kinds of Chinese century classic cinemas, 100 kinds of Chaozhou Opera grand view, Chaoshan literature and art and other audio-visual and electronic literature. There are more than 10000 volumes of local literature and 20000 volumes of thread bound ancient books. Published monographs: Chaoshan literature bibliography of Shantou Library (Huacheng Publishing House), Chaoshan literature bibliography (Guangdong People's Publishing House) Co edited with Zhongshan Library of Guangdong Province, and Chaozhou poetry collection (Shantou University Publishing House) Co edited with Chaoshan historical and cultural research center. The collection of literature resources has basically formed a collection system with Chaoshan local characteristics.

There are 22356 ancient books in Shantou library, including 196 rare books of 30 kinds. The museum has been included in the first batch of "key units for the protection of ancient books in Guangdong Province" by experts from the Provincial Center for the protection of ancient books, determined by the Provincial Department of culture and approved by the provincial government. Among them, 11 ancient books, including Hongwu Zhengyun, bushuitaiji and wazhucao, have been included in the first batch of "list of precious ancient books in Guangdong Province". At the same time, the library has also signed a contract for the compilation of the general catalogue of Chinese ancient books, Guangsheng volume. At present, 96 kinds of local chronicles have been submitted. In 2013, the municipal library will continue to apply for the second batch of "Guangdong precious ancient books list", and continue to sort out and register the documents of the Republic of China Version.

The first batch of 11 ancient books selected into the "Guangdong Province precious ancient books list" can be called the "treasure of town library" of Shantou library, which has important cultural value, research value and collection value. Some of them reflect the regional characteristics of Chaoshan, which has a high reference value for the study of Chaoshan local history and chaoxue research.

Service Construction

Shantou library is a national first-class library. In 1994, it introduced the library automation integrated system of the Ministry of culture to realize the automatic management of book acquisition, editing, circulation, continuous publications, information consultation and other business work. In 1999, the library website was opened. The construction of characteristic database is one of the important resources of Shantou library. The databases that have been built online include Chaoshan food multimedia database, Chaoshan literature multimedia database (Chaoshan celebrities database at home and abroad, Chaoshan literature bibliography database, Shantou local planning database, Chaoshan genealogy database, Chaoshan folk custom database), Southeast Asia economic and trade database, etc . Among them: Chaoshan food multimedia database and Chaoshan literature multimedia database are scientific and technological projects approved by the Ministry of culture. In 2003, the municipal sub center of Shantou national cultural information resource sharing project was started. In 2004, Shantou digital culture network was established. The new library has an advanced intelligent system with 1000 information nodes, an electronic reading room, an audio-visual reading room and 96 computers. It mainly provides the public with sharing engineering services, including Internet information query, electronic literature reading, multimedia browsing, audio-visual material appreciation, database retrieval, etc. In 2010, a reading room for the visually impaired will be built. Through the Braille conversion software, voice software, Braille typewriter and Braille point display, the multi-function of electronic Braille reading, voice reading, online information exchange, reading and writing documents for the blind and printing documents will be realized, so as to provide a real barrier free reading for the visually impaired readers.

Shantou library is an important place for urban public cultural facilities. It has a rich collection of literature and provides fast literature and information services. The new library implements card free reading and voucher lending, and has set up more than 20 reader service windows, including Chinese book lending room, newspaper reading room, children's book lending room, Chaoshan literature multimedia reading room, Chaoshan folk culture reading room, tea culture reading room, information consultation, electronic service area, leisure service area, etc., to carry out lending, reading, reference consultation and network information service And other services. It can receive 4000 readers a day, set up 2800 reading seats, open 63 hours a week, and provide 24-hour uninterrupted service to readers through the broadband network. The new museum also has an exhibition hall of 550 square meters, a lecture hall of 260 seats, a multi-function hall, conference rooms, training classrooms, etc. to hold lectures, training, exhibitions, academic exchanges and other activities. So that readers can study, research, activities and leisure in their own places.
