Historical evolution
In 1919, Yan Wenliang, the founder of modern Chinese art, art educator and oil painter, together with his colleagues, launched the "art competition" in Suzhou, which created the first "Art Exhibition" in the history of modern Chinese art. With the purpose of "advocating painting, encouraging each other, just browsing and not judging", it has been held every new year's day in Suzhou for 21 times. In 1922, he and his like-minded friends Hu cuizhong and Zhu Shijie established the Academy of fine arts. After more than ten years of exploration and efforts, the foundation of the new academy was laid in October 1931. In 1932, with the approval of the Ministry of education, Suzhou Academy of fine arts was officially named as Suzhou Academy of fine arts. It is the first Academy of Fine Arts in China officially named by the government. In 1927, Yan Wenliang established Suzhou Art Museum, which is also the predecessor of Suzhou Art Museum.
In September 1987, Suzhou Municipal People's government listed the former site of Art College as a municipal cultural relic protection unit, and decided to rebuild Suzhou Art Museum here. Since 1995, the old site has been comprehensively renovated to preserve the original appearance, and the interior has been transformed according to the functional requirements of the museum. At the end of 1996, Suzhou Art Museum and Yan Wenliang memorial hall were officially opened to the public. In 2011, the government invested again to move the Suzhou Art Museum to 2075 Renmin Road, which was included in the scope of Suzhou public cultural center.
Collection in the Museum
Suzhou Art Museum takes the "management measures for collection of art works of Suzhou Art Museum (Trial)" as the standard, through the channels of "exhibition instead of collection" and striving for donation, after nearly two or three years of efforts, the collection has grown from scratch and gradually formed a system, covering the categories of contemporary Chinese art.
From April 2012, the collection department began to carry out detailed sorting and cataloging work on the collections. In August, he compiled the collection Atlas of Suzhou Art Museum 2009-2011.
