Architectural features
"Tang mansion" is located at No. 35, Lane 2023, Sichuan North Road, Hongkou District, Shanghai (accessible from Duolun Road Celebrity Culture Street). The whole building is French neoclassicism style, red wall with white eaves, window cover and entrance deformation, two-story high Collins column, very magnificent, the building plane presents the door shape, symmetrical layout, East and West with small side doors, south entrance main porch has four giant columns, both sides of the concave semicircular niches, carved from white marble. The upper part of the porch is a terrace on the second floor, which is now closed. The cast iron railings are exquisitely designed, showing an arc plane, highlighting the entrance and playing the role of a small awning. The back treatment at both ends keeps the integrity of the colonnade, with pleasant scale, rich details and varying levels.
French classical architecture dating back to the 17th century has obvious three-stage division in both horizontal and vertical directions, which emphasizes the commanding role of column in composition. From the end of the 19th century to the 1920s, the form of retro architecture in Europe and America has been stylized. Neoclassicism style form has been more concise, influenced by modernism, architectural treatment can pay attention to reasonable function and form change, color collocation is also more free. At that time, Shanghai had developed into a metropolis in the Far East, and many beautiful garden houses were built. Tang mansion was an example.
Historical evolution
Tang Enbo's residence was originally built by the Li brothers in Guangdong Province in the 1920s. During the Anti Japanese War, it was occupied by the Japanese army as an officer's dormitory. After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, it was occupied by Tang Enbo, known as "Tang mansion". Later, it was the residence of Chen Yi, chairman of the Kuomintang in Zhejiang Province. Tang Enbo helped Chen Yi, got Chen's support and recommendation, and married his niece Huang Jingbai. Tang confused Chen with the appearance of gratitude. At the beginning of 1949, Chen Yi sent her nephew Ding Mingnan to Shanghai with a personal letter to instigate Tang Enbo's uprising, which failed and was betrayed. In this house, Chen Yi was arrested and taken to Taiwan to be killed.
