Song Ziwen residence

Song Ziwen's residence is located at No.1, North Pole Pavilion, Jilong mountain, Xuanwu District, Nanjing. It was originally Song Ziwen's residence in Nanjing, designed by Yang Tingbao and built by Tao Fuji construction factory. The building was built in 1933 when Song Ziwen was Minister of finance of the national government. It was rebuilt in 1946. After 1949, it has been used as Liu Bocheng's residence and Jiangsu provincial Party committee's guest house. Now it is the Executive Office of Nanjing Association for science and technology.

The building is built according to the mountain situation and adopts the western country villa style. The gentle slope on the northwest side is an open and flat stone yard, and the steep slope on the southeast side is a garden. The building has three floors and a steel-concrete structure, with a total area of about 700 square meters. The first floor used to be the guard house, kitchen and other auxiliary rooms, and the walls were built with natural rubble. The exterior walls of the second and third floors were painted with vermilion, and the elastic wall technology was used to obtain the uneven effect. In the northwest of the second floor, there is a main entrance, from the stone arch gallery into the large reception hall with fireplace, and the living room connects with the original dining room and study at both ends of the square. The reinforced concrete ceiling beam in the reception hall is made into a very realistic imitation wood structure. The third floor used to be two bedrooms with bathrooms. The roof is an unsymmetrical herringbone shape, with a tiger window and a rectangular fireplace chimney. During construction, it is made of imported white cement mixed with yellow sand spread on the reeds produced in Baguazhou and Jiangxinzhou, which has the effect of heat insulation, heat preservation and preventing roof seepage.

Song Ziwen mansion was built in 1933, with two buildings, the plane is curved, and the construction area is 720 square meters. The cross arched porch of the main building has a rough roof like a grass roof, and its appearance is very simple. The chimneys and tiger windows add the ups and downs of the body block. The western style building on one side is the residence where Zhang Xueliang was imprisoned after the Xi'an Incident. Now it is the guest house of Nanjing Association for science and technology. Located at No. 1, Arctic Pavilion, it was built in 1933 when Song Ziwen was the Minister of finance of the national government. It was rebuilt after the victory of the Anti Japanese war. Designed by architect Yang Tingbao, the residence has a building area of 720 square meters. It is a three-story reinforced concrete structure with a curved plane. It is built close to the mountain. The buildings rise and fall with the mountain and are well arranged.

Architecture

The bottom layer of the song mansion is made of rubble, which is very solid; the upper two layers are made of brick, and the surface is painted with elastic coating technology, which has a strong three-dimensional feeling. The most special feature of the residence is its roof, which has the flavor of a farmhouse. From a distance, it seems to be made of thatch, so it is commonly known as "thatched house". In fact, the roof of the song mansion is made of imported white cement mixed with yellow sand on the reed. There are three layers, each layer is about 2 cm thick, and the top layer is made into a honeycomb, so it gives people the illusion of a thatched house. This special roof treatment method has the functions of heat insulation, fire prevention and seepage prevention, and can keep the indoor warm in winter and cool in summer. It is a combination of beauty and practical application. The appearance of the residence is not spectacular, low walls, thatched roof, just like a village villa. But after a careful inquiry, we found that the thatch on the roof was imported from Latin America, even the shutters were imported, and the switching devices were mechanized. The reception room of the residence is exquisite and comfortable. The floor, wood and sofa are all imported from foreign countries. At that time, there was only one song residence with air-conditioning system.

The impression of song mansion is exquisite, elegant and full of Western flavor. The entrance of the song mansion is located in the northwest of the second floor. The interior decoration is magnificent and different. There are both western style and Chinese style furnishings. On the ground floor of the residence are the housing, kitchen and auxiliary rooms for the guards; on the second floor are the reception room, dining room and study; on the third floor are the living rooms of the Song Ziwen couple and their children, bathrooms and washrooms. The beams on the top of the residence look like wood, but they are made of cement, which is rare in China.

Honors

At that time, it was not only the residence of Song Ziwen, but also the secret meeting place of Kuomintang people. A lot of important decision-making strategies have become part of it. Especially after the Xi'an Incident which shocked China and foreign countries launched by Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng on December 12, 1936, there were even more crowns and gatherings here. The KMT officials and dignitaries rushed in and out of the song mansion, and finally formed a democratic political group with the song sisters as the core, competing with the Crusaders headed by he Yingqin. On December 20 and 22 of the same year, Song Ziwen went to Xi'an to meet with Chiang Kai Shek and mediated, which eventually promoted the peaceful settlement of the Xi'an Incident.

In the northeast of song mansion, there is a classical double-layer building, which is connected with stone steps. This is the place where Chiang Kai Shek imprisoned patriotic general Zhang Xueliang, commonly known as the "prison Zhang Lou". After the Xi'an Incident, Zhang Xueliang escorted Chiang Kai Shek, Song Meiling and Song Ziwen back to Nanjing. When they got off the plane, Chiang betrayed his faith and imprisoned Zhang Xueliang. The move shocked the whole country and made the country sad. On December 31, the Nanjing Kuomintang government organized a high military court to try Zhang Xueliang and sentenced him to 10 years' imprisonment. Then Zhang was transferred to the eastern suburbs. On January 4, 1938, the Kuomintang government issued an "amnesty order", which was still handed over to the Military Commission for strict control. Under the lobbying of Song Meiling and Song Ziwen, Zhang Xueliang was transferred to Song Ziwen residence, which is the origin of "jailing Zhang Lou".

Song Ziwen mansion, No.1 of the Arctic Pavilion, is a magnificent and commanding building. Song Ziwen is the eldest brother of Song Qingling and the elder brother of Song Meiling. According to the status theory of feudal times, this is the uncle of two generations. However, his prosperity did not depend on his brother-in-law's promotion, but on his superior financial management ability. He has a master's degree in economics from Harvard University and a doctor's degree from Columbia University. Since he was less than 30 years old, he has become the manager of the Kuomintang. He has successively served as the governor of the central bank, Minister of finance, Minister of foreign affairs, China's first ambassador to the United Nations, and President of the Executive Yuan. This house was built in 1933. In 1945, after the national government returned Nanjing, he rebuilt it. The whole house is Spanish style, the shape is very chic, the most strange is the sloping roof covered with thick reeds, so it was called "thatched house". It not only shows the designer's ingenious conception, but also reflects the owner's aesthetic taste. The cedar in front of the house should be planted in the past. It is as broad as a canopy, thick shade blocks out the sun, and the utensils are magnificent.

In addition to the name of the building itself, this house should also be a legacy in the political history of the Republic of China. Due to the special status of the Song family, this house has always been a club for high-ranking officials. Zhang Xueliang, a former deputy commander-in-chief of the army, navy and air force, often comes here and makes friends with Ziwen and Meiling. At that time, the "Xi'an Incident" broke out suddenly, and Song Ziwen's family immediately became a place where the government's important people gathered frequently. Most of the people fought against the rebels by force. Only the brothers and sisters of song advocated negotiating with Zhang and yang to solve the incident. A few days later, relying on his friendship with Zhang Xueliang, Song Ziwen went to Xi'an and met with Jiang, Zhang and Yang for many times, which eventually contributed to the peaceful settlement of the incident.

However, Song Ziwen was embarrassed that his stubborn brother-in-law broke his promise. The classical two-story building on the northeast slope not far from the house is the place where he was a little embarrassed. On December 25, 2008, Zhang Xueliang personally sent Chiang Kai Shek back to Beijing to show his selflessness of "military admonition", but he was immediately judged by military law. On the last day of the year, he was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment. At the beginning of the next year, the national government issued an amnesty order, but the Military Commission was required to "strictly control" the amnesty order, which in fact led to imprisonment. Song Ziwen, who used to guarantee Zhang Xueliang's personal safety with his personality, was unable to return to heaven at this time, and his younger sister Meiling's complaint couldn't change Jiang's mind (it seems that Jiang didn't follow his wife's advice), so his brothers and sisters had to strive to take Zhang Xueliang home. That green house has become a gloomy "prison building".

On the eve of the fall of the Nanjing government, Song Ziwen did not want to work with his brother-in-law any more, so he went straight to the United States and became an apartment until he died in San Francisco at the age of 77.
