"Water Margin" is a well-known novel for women and children in China. Abroad, it is also one of the most popular works of people all over the world. Water Margin has been translated into more than ten languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Hungarian, Czech, polish, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Indonesian and Latin.

Water margin was first spread to Japan. According to the Japanese sinologist Mr. Bai Mu Zhiye's "outlaws of the marshes in Japan and the simplified version of the text," in the second half of the 17th century, "outlaws of the marsh" came to be seen by Japanese people In 1728, during the Edo period in Japan, twenty chapters of Zhongyi Shuihu, which was commented by Mr. Li zhuowu, were engraved. In 1757, okashima koushan adapted the popular Zhongyi Shuihu into 70 volumes based on the hundred chapters of Zhongyi Shuihu commented by Li zhuowu. After that, there were more than 20 kinds of dramas, among which the dramas Shuihu and xushuihu translated and adapted by the former troupes were the most successful. It is more loyal to the original and praised by the Japanese people. For example, Lin Chong and Hu Sanniang are portrayed as a pair of lovers with deep feelings, while Wang Ying, a short legged tiger, is a loser in love. In the west, French translation is the earliest. Translated by Bazin, a French sinologist, it was published in the 57th issue of the Journal of Asia in 1850. In 1883, the Italian version of Water Margin appeared in Italy. The translator is Andreas, an Italian. He edited the story of Lu Zhishen and published it in Milan. At the beginning of the 20th century, the German translated "the tooth of Buddha" into German and published it. The title of the book was changed to "the whole story of Luda's ascent to the mountain". Andre ogi, another Italian, translated the stories of Yang Xiong, Shi Xiu, Pei Ruhai and pan Qiaoyun into a book called the man of Bodhisattvas.

Historical records

In 1927, Berlin published a special translation of Wu Song, which is called robber and soldier. The translator is erinstar. The translator didn't know Chinese. He only sorted out and processed the dictation of a Chinese student. As a result, he made a lot of jokes: for example, he mistook Li Kui's story on Wu Song, and turned it into Dai Zong's divine action to punish Wu Song. Wu Song would also shake his head and recite Bai Juyi's poems. This is such a book, which was later translated into English and published in London It was serialized in the magazine, and the title of the book was changed to the adventures of a Chinese giant. The German translation of Shuihu is the most popular, with various titles, which are very interesting: the story of Yang Xiong and pan Qiaoyun is translated as holy temple; the story of Wu Dalang and Pan Jinlian is translated as the story of the unfaithful woman who sells cookcakes in Wuda; the attack of huangnigang and the trap set by robbers are also translated, with the contents of Chao Gai and Wu Yong's wisdom to win a living Chen Gang's story. The earliest 70 chapters of the outlaws of the marsh in the West are translated in German with the titles of robbers and soldiers and Chinese warriors in French. One hundred and twenty chapters of outlaws of the marsh include the English version of bandits in Liangshanpo and the Italian version of bandits. Most of the Western versions, especially the extracts, are incomplete and not faithful to the original, but some of them are popular with Europeans.

"Water Margin" spread earlier in Korea and Southeast Asian countries. In the period of Li Dynasty in the 17th century, North Korea translated "Water Margin" and compiled a "vocabulary of Water Margin novels". Former Vietnamese President Ho Chi Minh is a water margin enthusiast. In the early 1950s, there was a 67 chapter version of the Yue version of Shuihu, which was based on the 70 chapter version of Shuihu. Indonesia also serialized the story of "Water Margin" in its "weekly news of the week" in the early 1950s, with the title of "108 heroes of Liangshan".

There are many foreign versions of Water Margin, and the best one is brothers all over the world, which was published in the United States in 1933. The translator is the 1938 Nobel Prize winner in literature, American writer Pearl sidenstralik Booker. She came to China as a child to talk with Chinese teachers about Chinese classics, proficient in Chinese characters and familiar with Chinese society. She also took a Chinese Name: Pearl Buck. According to Jin Shengtan's seventy chapters, she translated Shuihu accurately, vividly and faithfully. In his letter to a friend, Lu Xun once said, "it's well known that Madame Booker has translated Water Margin recently." (letter to Yaoke) shows the success of his translation.

Because Pearl S. Buck's translation is in English and more faithful to the original, it soon spread to Europe, so that Europe has a relatively complete and reliable translation.
