History and Humanities
The name of Dabie Mountain was recorded in Shangshu Yugong more than 3000 years ago. The chapter of Yugong includes "inner side, as for Dabie" and "Guo San Shu, as for Dabie". In Zuo Zhuan, the fourth year of Duke Ding, it is said that "Wu Shi attacked Ying, Chu Zi always helped Han Dynasty, and Chen, from xiaobie to Dabie." As for the origin of the name of Dabie Mountain, there are many different opinions, but the more popular ones are as follows:
1. Some people say it got its name from Li Bai. According to legend, when Li Bai ascended Tiantangzhai, the main peak of the Dabie Mountains, to enjoy the scenery on the north and south sides, he found that the scenery on the north and south sides of the mountain was quite different. He couldn't help exclaiming: "the south of the mountain is full of flowers; the north of the mountain is covered with snow, so this mountain is quite different from other mountains!" Hence the name of Dabie Mountain.
2. Another argument comes from the geo academic community. According to the research of geo cultural scholars, the current Dabie Mountains were once a vast ocean in ancient times. Due to the crustal movement, the ground here began to rise, and then gradually formed the current Dabie Mountains. The Dabie Mountains and the western Qinling Mountains lie in the middle of China, stretching for more than 1000 kilometers. They are the watershed of China's north-south water system. Because it separates the Yangtze River and Huaihe river systems, as well as the states of Wu and Chu, the climate and vegetation of the two places are quite different, so it is called Dabie Mountain.
