Zhao Haixian building

Zhao Haixian building is also known as Zhao Haixian's former residence. Located in the inner side of Jiashu Lane in the east gate of Xinghua City, shangzhenmiaoqiao Lane in the East, Beishu Lane in the north, and folk houses in the south, it was built in the late Qing Dynasty, a building with Chinese and Western characteristics. Because of this building, Jiashu lane is also called Yanglou lane by local people. Surrounded by the Ming and Qing Dynasties era of ancient residential buildings, green brick Daiwa, deep house courtyard, quiet narrow lane, natural harmony, superior geographical environment. The whole former residence covers an area of 882 square meters, with a construction area of 499 square meters. In 1986, the people's Government of Xinghua County announced it as a cultural relic protection unit.

brief introduction

Zhao Haixian, a famous doctor in the late Qing Dynasty (1830-1904), was named lu'ao. Xinghua people, whose ancestral home is Gaoyou, have been practicing medicine for generations. He studied medicine since he was a child. He was well versed in the classics of traditional Chinese medicine, learned a lot, and had a lot of attainments. He abided by the classics rather than the ancient. He was good at treating difficult and miscellaneous diseases, and was known as "Zhao Banxian". His works include "debate on Cholera", "continuation of Dialectics", "theory of yin and Yang and five elements", "Zhao's secret medicine", etc. Medical records are recorded in many handed down medical books. It not only has excellent medical skills, but also has benevolent heart and noble medical ethics. It often provides free medical treatment for poor people. Published in the early days of the Qing Dynasty, the essence of medical records of famous doctors in the Qing Dynasty contained: "Zhao Haixian... He is also a doctor of Confucianism. He is good at medicine. He says, "medicine is benevolent, but not benevolent. What's the use of medicine?" So far, the country has been enjoying "the way of life". According to the records of Xinghua county annals, during the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, Empress Dowager Cixi fell ill and called famous doctors all over the world for consultation. Liu Kun, governor of Liangjiang, recommended Zhao Haixian to attend the meeting. Zhao Haixian was afraid of causing trouble and said he was ill.

Zhao Haixian foreign building was funded by Yangzhou Salt Merchants, provided by Jiangdu wood company, and constructed by Ningbo craftsmen. It was designed by Japanese to repay the kindness of curing diseases and saving lives. It was given to Mr. Zhao Haixian after construction. At that time, Zhao Haixian had been living, practicing medicine, studying and writing in foreign buildings. This building is not only the product of the extensive and profound history of traditional Chinese medicine, but also the demonstration of a generation of famous doctors, benevolent doctors, exquisite medical skills and noble medical ethics. This directly led to the prosperity of drugstores in Xinghua, such as shangchizhai, heshantang, yinhetang, etc.

Over the past two hundred years, the zhaohaixian western style building has gone through many vicissitudes. It has changed from a glorious landmark to a devastated and dilapidated one. Up to now, Xinghua municipal government has invested 2 million yuan in the planning and design of Yangzhou University and the renovation of Yangzhou Chongguang Classical Architectural Engineering Co., Ltd. In the whole renovation, the original shape, layout and artistic style are maintained; the structural method and characteristics are maintained; the craft technique is maintained, and the original texture of components is maintained; modern materials are not used to replace the original materials as far as possible. Where the original building components can be used, they shall be retained as far as possible, and the damaged ones shall be repaired according to the original shape with the same materials. According to historical records and the memories of Zhao's descendants and local old people, some of the rockeries have been damaged. After repeated investigation and textual research, a plan was made and approved by Zhao Haixian's descendants before they were repaired. On October 30 this year, the 89 year old Zhao Yimin, the fourth generation grandson of Zhao Haixian, visited the renovated Zhao Haixian building with his family.

Zhao Haixian's former residence as a whole looks like a luxury suite in a hotel. It is divided into corridor room and Yu Garden. It is displayed from east to west, mainly in the East and connected by a round door in the middle.

After entering from the west gate through the hall, there are two corridors in the north and the south, both of which are the old ridges of blue brick gables and tile houses, with brick carvings under the eaves and blue stone steps out of the eaves. The North corridor room is the place where Zhao Haixian practices medical consultation, while the South Corridor room is the place where the herbs are boiled. The roofs of the two corridors are pointed eaves at both ends, and in the middle are evergreen brick carvings, which look like two dragons. Between the two corridors is a rectangular patio with square tiles. The back of the North corridor house is a back garden, where grass, flowers and bamboo are planted. Although it is also rectangular, the black brick road in the middle is serpentine and curved, which adds a bit of interest.

The gallery is separated from the east courtyard by flower walls. The south end of the flower wall used to be a flower bed, and the north end has a Chinese style round door under the arch, which is the only entrance to the east courtyard. There is a stone plaque on the top of the door, which is engraved with the word "Yu Yuan". It means that Mr. Zhao Haixian's ancestral home is Gaoyou. Gaoyou was called Yucheng in ancient times, and its home is Yu Yuan, which shows his strong hometown complex. There is also a stone plaque on the East inner side of the round gate corresponding to the West outer side, which reads "on the cloud of Yiqing". Here, "Yiqing" refers to a comfortable and peaceful state of mind, which means transcending the earthly world and entering the heaven. The two stone plaques are official script on the outside and seal script on the inside. The handwriting is neat, elegant and pleasing to the eye.

The south room in the garden is a study. Mr. Zhao Haixian has been studying hard for many years, writing books, teaching disciples, and coming out with a number of classic case books and highly skilled doctors. On the east side of the park, there is a square pavilion with a mountain and a rockery in the middle. The two rockeries stand side by side like brothers, and they are also like beasts guarding the garden. Looking down from the top, the two mountains are lion shaped in the East and tiger shaped in the West. They are both made of Taihu Lake stones and are located on both sides of the pool. The pool is like a jade pool in the sky and a cornucopia waiting for wealth to gather. The construction of a small suspension bridge connects the cobblestone curved path in the garden with rockery and pool. For example, connecting the study with the pool, rockery and so on, living in a small bridge and flowing water, can not help but produce a feeling of "the book has its own golden house". The scenery in the garden is more of an experience of living in a fairyland. Fangting is a place for Mr. Zhao Haixian to take a rest in his spare time, but it is more for the waiting patients and accompanying family members. To the north of Yuyuan is a three story, twenty-eight western style building, which is the core and landmark of Zhao Haixian's former residence, and also the residence of Mr. Zhao Haixian. The western style building faces south from the north. The corridor is connected with the South study and the Square Pavilion. The brick and wood structure on the top of the mountain is imitated by the Roman architectural style. Twelve whole wooden columns from the bottom to the top, from the first floor to the third floor, all the way to the top. There is no second place in a thousand miles, which is very imposing. The wood frame and brick wall are decorated in the traditional way, and the roof cornice, indoor ceiling, second and third floor wooden doors and windows are all western style. Blinds, arc lines and other Western-style structures in the eastern civilization, it is more charming, eye-catching.

The open space of the wooden structure of the western style building is column beam type, with seven trusses on top, four columns on the second space and eaves trusses on top, and the front eaves columns on the third floor are overhanging outwards. The roof structure is connected by mortise and tenon, and some parts are connected by cross cutting and half tenon and dovetail tenon. The roof is made of joint fir, the front eaves are out of eaves, and the two sides and back eaves are sealed eaves. Sunflower type wooden railings are set between the two floors of the western style building. On the second floor, the open space of the outer eaves is set with three windows, and the upper half circle arched six glass split window. Under the window is the ancient wooden skirt board, and the two-time wooden fence enclosure, and the upper part is the hollow carved wooden cover. Each room on the ground floor is equipped with long ancient windows. The two sides of the frame are decorated with "Chinese knot" carvings, and the four corners are decorated with bats and Shoutao patterns, implying "complete blessing and longevity". The north side of the second floor is the movable shutter door, and so is the North rear window. The eaves of the third floor are more than 11 meters above the ground. The most special part of the western style building is the fireplace. The western style is below, and the Chinese style dressing table is on the top. It is a wonderful work, and few of them are on the right. This kind of layout is rare in the history of Chinese architecture.

There are built-in stairs in the East Room of the western style building, but they are steep and narrow. Between the western style building and the North corridor room, there is an external revolving staircase, which is originally of wood structure. It leads from the platform to the corridor on the second floor and the rear eaves, and then turns back to the corridor on the third floor from the sub passage. The corridor leads to the back garden, which is said to be a "storeroom". The stairs turn from the ground to the third floor, like the Dragon King of Donghai. The dragon's head is in the corridor of the third floor, and the dragon's tail is the stairway on the ground.

As a whole, all the bricks and trees in the former residence have the right carving pictures. Most of the contents are unicorn and evergreen flowers and plants, which are full of the owner's wishes and vitality. The walls are exquisitely and skillfully decorated with thin brick lines, and the inner side is decorated with fine flower stalls. The 16 components form a pattern. The wood is mainly made of fir, and the color is mainly bronze and white. With the green brick wall, it feels both magnificent and pure, elegant and unique. After the completion of the western style building, the audience is like a tide.

Zhao Haixian's former residence, which used to be shared by pharmaceutical companies and agricultural means companies, and also inhabited by Zhao's descendants, has been renovated to reproduce the style of foreign style buildings of that year. You can see the waves of Dongmen Park in ancient times and the panoramic view of jindongmen historic district in modern times.

In the morning light, it seems that Mr. Zhao Haixian is giving the common people pulse consultation, prescribing treatment, showing benevolence and virtue; in the sunset, the foreign building of Zhao Haixian is like a calm old man, giving people a dignified taste.

Zhao Haixian is good at treating difficult and miscellaneous diseases. One day, as the sun was setting, Dr. Zhao was preparing pills at home. He pushed the door and walked into a young couple. After saluting Dr. Zhao, the man said, "we came here from the countryside. Please treat my daughter-in-law for this disease." I saw the young woman holding her hands all the time. The man said, "she combs her hair in the morning and says that she can't drop any hands. She always raises her hands. It's very uncomfortable. Dr. Zhao, please think of a way to let her hands down."
