The British Consulate opened in 1867. It is located in Shandong Road, Yantai, covering an area of more than 60 mu. It is composed of the consulate and a number of ancillary buildings. In addition to combining the local characteristics of Yantai, the early building materials and construction techniques also adopted the "veranda" design of the British in its Asian colony according to the local landscape characteristics of Yantai Mountain. This design has single-sided corridor, double-sided corridor, inner covered corridor and ring corridor, which is oriented to the best position of landscape viewing, and has the characteristics of ventilation, sunshade and temperature insulation. The interior is designed according to European custom, with fireplace and line corner decoration. The style is simple and simple. In the later period, most of the buildings were British style. One of the larger brick and wood structure of the two-story building adopts the "coupon Gallery" style.
In 1987, the museum was announced as a municipal cultural relics protection unit by Yantai Municipal People's government.
In 1992, it was announced as a provincial cultural relic protection unit by Shandong Provincial People's government.
