Brief introduction to temples
Wanfu temple is located in Huangbo mountain, Yuxi Town, Fuqing County, Fujian Province. Wanfu temple was founded in the fifth year of Zhenyuan (789 AD). Since the Tang Dynasty, the rise and fall of different dynasties, the Ming Dynasty period many times to build, Ming Wanli forty second year (1614) Emperor granted "Wanfu Temple" plaque. In 1928, the temple was destroyed by mountain torrents. Fujian Buddhist Association set up a construction committee to repair Wanfu temple.
In 1652, Yiran, the abbot of Xingfu temple built by Chinese monks in Nagasaki, Japan, and the Dharma protectors of tangsan Temple went to sea many times and jointly invited Yinyuan of the temple to go eastward to promote Buddhism. In May 1654, Yin yuan led 30 disciples to the South and arrived in Nagasaki, Japan on July 5. After arriving in Japan, he was given preferential treatment by the emperor and general Tokugawa of Tokugawa shogunate, and built a temple in Kyoto. After the completion of the new temple, Yinyuan did not forget the old mountain, named Wanfu Temple of huangboshan, and established a new sect, which was named huangboshan, standing side by side with the original Linji and caodong in Japan.
Related allusions
Later, Japanese monks called the ancestral temple in Fujian "ancient Phellodendron amurense" and the new temple in Kyoto "new Phellodendron amurense". The architectural scale, jungle system and religious rituals of huangbershan in Japan are completely similar to those of huangbershan in Fuqing. Today, it still retains the scale of the Yinyuan era 300 years ago. Most of the first ten generations of abbots were Chinese monks. After the middle of the Qing Dynasty, the exchange of monks between China and Japan was on the verge of stagnation. In 1979, headed by Hatoyama YOSHII, the head of the assembly, the temples of Huangbo sect in Japan formed the "ancient Huangbo pagoda friendly visiting group" and came to Wanfu Temple of Huangbo mountain in Fuzhou to worship the ancestors of the pagoda, thus restoring the long-standing friendship between China and Japan. Since then, the "Japan China Friendship Association of Linji and Phellodendron amurense" has organized several groups to visit China. In 1983, they set up a monument to commemorate "the land where Zen master Yinyuan, the founder of Wanfu temple in Huangbo mountain, Japan, went to Zhenxi.".
In 1983, Wanfu temple was designated as the national key temple in the Han area.
geographical position
Wanfu temple is located in Huangbo mountain, northwest of Yuxi Town, Fuqing City, Fujian Province. In ancient times, huangboshan mountain was named for its abundant Phellodendron amurense.
The origin of temple construction
In 789, the fifth year of Zhengyuan period in Tang Dynasty, Putian people were learning Zen from Huineng, the sixth patriarch, and then returned to Fujian. They passed by Huangbo mountain and loved its beautiful mountains and rivers. They remembered master's gift of "stop when you encounter suffering". Because they realized that Huangbo is bitter, they opened a mountain and built a temple, which was originally named "Prajna hall". In the eighth year of Zhenyuan (792), a courtyard was built to the east of the hall. The temple had a large scale. The imperial court granted it the name of "Jianfu Temple", commonly known as "Huangbo Temple". In 848, Xi Yun came here to become a monk.
Later, he went to Baizhang mountain in Jiangxi Province to pay homage to Huaihai. After receiving his heart seal, Xiyun later built a temple in Jiufeng Mountain in Gao'an, Hongzhou (now Yifeng county), and changed its name to Huangbo mountain. Huaihai passed on Xiyun and Xiyun passed on Yixuan, and huangboshan became one of the birthplaces of linjizong.
In the Song Dynasty, Linji sect was still popular. During the Shaoxing period (1131-1162), Yangqi sect's good fruit Zen master of Linji sect came to the abbot of Huangbo mountain in Fujian for 10 years. In the Yuan Dynasty, the temple gradually declined and almost deserted.
Reconstruction period
In the 23rd year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1390), the temple monks were greatly relieved and rebuilt with the help of Zhou Xinjian, a Buddhist monk in Putian.
In the 34th year of Jiajing (1555), Japanese pirates invaded the coastal areas of Fujian and destroyed the temple in the war.
At the beginning of Longqing period (1567-1568), monk Zhongtian made a vow to rebuild and went to Beijing to play the Scriptures. After eight years of hard work, he died in the capital.
His disciples Jianyuan and Jingyuan inherited their will and went to the capital. They got the help of Ye Xianggao, the Prime Minister of the city. The imperial court gave them 678 letters of Sutra, purple cassock and Wanfu temple, which is still in use today.
Destroyed in a fire
At that time, the temple had not yet been restored. After returning to the temple, Jianyuan and Jingyuan started to build the main hall and Dharma hall. Ye Xianggao also donated a sutra pavilion to build. The temple began to decline and prosper.
In the second year of Chongzhen (1629), the East and West guest hall was built. Monks went to Guanghui temple in Jinshu mountain of Huzhou to invite Miyun Yuanwu to be the abbot.
In 1633, Miyun retired, and Fei yintongrong, the Zen master, took over the seat. Yinyuan was promoted to the West Hall.
In 1637, the ten year reign of emperor Chongzhen (1637), Yin yuan got his heart seal. The abbot of Wanfu temple in huangboshan went as far as Zhangzhou and Chaozhou to raise money. After years of hard work, he built more than 30 large and small places, such as Daxiong hall, Fatang, Shanmen, Zhaitang, bell and Drum Tower, storehouse and squatter house.
At the same time, Yinyuan also vigorously carried forward Linji zongfeng.
In the 11th year of Shunzhi (1654), Yin yuan migrated to Japan, and Hui men Xing Pei took over as the abbot.
During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1736-1795), the temple declined again, and the monk Qingfu once collected money for restoration.
In 1928, the temple was suddenly robbed by mountain torrents and suffered serious losses.
In 1949, a fire broke out again, destroying the millennium old temple in a single torch, and burning all the Scriptures and cultural relics.
Rebuilding Wanfu Temple
In the spring of 1957, despite the efforts of many parties, only two Fatang and Abbot's chambers were built at the former site of the Tang Dynasty for the monks to live in, so it was difficult to restore the overall appearance of the temple.
In 1966, the temple was on the verge of abandonment.
In 1983, the temple was listed as a key Buddhist temple in the Han nationality area of China.
In April 1989, the "Wanfu Temple Construction Committee of huangboshan in Fuqing" was established. Zhao Puchu, the late president of China Buddhist Association, was appointed as honorary director. Miao Zhan, the late president of Fujian Buddhist Association and Abbot of Nanputuo temple in Xiamen, was appointed as director. The abbot (supervisor) of provincial and national open temples was appointed as member. The restoration of Wanfu temple was carried out. Both the State Council and provincial people's government have allocated funds.
With the support of Shifang Shanxin, the first phase of the restoration project began in the summer of 1989. First, a 600 square meter FA Tang was rebuilt and a 160 square meter Daliao was built.
After years of hard work, especially with the support of overseas Chinese, the reconstruction project of Wanfu temple in huangboshan has been completed. Now the mountain gate, Tianwang hall, bell and Drum Tower, Daxiong hall, FA hall, Chan hall and Yinyuan memorial hall have been replaced. On December 8, 1997, a grand ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the reconstruction and the opening of the Buddha statue. There are three stone troughs in the temple. One of them is inscribed in the Song Dynasty with the inscription "Seng Chun was born to four benefactors and three homes. It was built in July of the fifth year of the Qing Dynasty (1045), and the abbot was restored to him.".
The famous mountain of Huangbo, the place where Xuanzong of Tang Dynasty watched waterfalls and chanted together, and the area where Liang Jiangyan traveled to Fujian. Prime Minister Pei converted to duanji, the distant ancestor, and ye Xiangguo protected the book collection. Rock, cave, stone, ridge, stream, pool, well, spring, nunnery, hall, tower and courtyard are closely arranged, forming their own landscape. Shi Zibai, a famous personage of the government and the public, wrote poems, chanted couplets and engraved inscriptions on the cliffs, which doubled the interest of the outside world.
In this flourishing age, when the Buddhist world is newly established, if you are a man of insight, you can go to the top of Huangbo peak and open your eyes. There are caves, gullies, forests and mountains, and there are real texts. There are pools, streams, woods and stones, and the body is made into a chapter.
Humanity in the temple
Ming Lingshu's poem says:
There are two Phellodendron amurense in the world. This Zhongshan is true. Looking at the inscriptions on the stele, the monk was a native of his hometown. He spent the night in the Buddhist chamber and talked with the guests on the road. The twelve patriarchs will be more respectful.
