Historical evolution
The north gate of Xiongzhen is inscribed on the gate of Dagushan port fort. The fort is located near the North Bank of the port and slightly higher than the sea level. According to the interview book of Fengshan County, the fort at the north gate of Xiongzhen is "at the point near the port, with eight barracks and two cannons in Zhouli.".
In May 1874 (the 13th year of Tongzhi), the Japanese army took advantage of the Ryukyu refugee incident and landed in Hengchun today. The Qing government ordered Shen Baozhen to come to Taiwan to handle coastal defense affairs. In October, the Qing government negotiated peace, and in December, the Japanese army withdrew from Hengchun. In 1875 (the first year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu), Shen Baozhen sent Tang dingkui to supervise the construction. At the same time, he started to build the fort at the north gate of Xiongzhen and the fort at the back of Qihou to jointly control the Dagou harbor, which was completed in 1876. The fort was designed by British engineers. Although it is European style, it is still integrated with Chinese style city gate, and has its own characteristics with the fort behind the flag. In 1888 (the 14th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu), Liu Mingchuan built another Dapingding fort at Dagushan. In 1894 (the 20th year of Emperor Guangxu), he added two 4.5-ton Armstrong cannons (6-inch caliber) to the north gate fort of Xiongzhen.
The north gate fort of Xiongzhen is a small irregular oval fort. Its entrance is a Chinese style city gate made of red brick. There are five battlements with peepholes on the battlements. Several people can stand on the city gate. The inscription "north gate of Xiongzhen" on the lintel of the fort echoes the inscription "Tiannan" on the lintel of the fort behind the flag. As for the barracks, they are underground, with barracks and storehouses underground on both sides of the entrance slope. The thick wall around the fort is composed of sanhetu and the sea side Zigu stone, which is irregular with the undulating terrain. The wall block in front of the gun seat is built by plate method, and the surface can be seen layer by layer.
Note: description of the gate of the fort behind the flag
In 1895, the front gate of "Qihou fort" was damaged by Japanese warships during the battle of Yiwei. The word "Tiannan" in the front gate can only be identified from the old photos. Therefore, when the Kaohsiung Municipal Government carried out the restoration in 1991, the word "Tiannan" was copied and enlarged from the old photos, and the word "Weizhen" was presented in empty words.
There are two theories about the missing words of the gate: first, according to the fact that Liu Fanzheng and Xie Mingke visited here in 1915 and mentioned the gate as "pillar Tiannan" in his book "travel to Taiwan"; second, in 1927, Chen Xiru mentioned "yingmenbianshu" in his book "qishanji" in liuhongxuan poetry anthology. The above statement is also described here for reference.
Status quo of historic sites
In 1995, the gate, Fort and sub wall were built. It is an open space for people to visit freely on weekdays.

architectural style
The fort at the north gate of Xiongzhen was built in the late Qing Dynasty. Compared with the gate of the fort at the back of the flag on the South Bank of Dagu harbor, the gate at the entrance is like the general Chinese city wall, with five brick battlements on it. Although it is a small fort beside a wharf, it also has camp gate, city wall, ammunition depot and barracks. It forms a complementary defense system with Qihou and Dagushan forts. The fort is located in the center of the port, with the camp gate facing east and facing the sentry boat head and dogfight city. The city walls are on the West and North and south sides, and the East and west sides are made of bricks and stones. The inner center is a slope The terrain is high in the West and low in the East. The walls of the fortress wall are all made of stone and sanhetu. The outer layer is a traditional Biying gate in the east of sanhetu wall. It is nearly square, with battlements on the top and a square entrance supported by lintel beam on the bottom. The battlements are made of brick. The upper end is made of two bricks layer by layer to form a ladder. The wall is made of outer bricks and inner stones. The corner pillars are made of thinner "Yanzhi" bricks. The central wall is made of bucket masonry, and the western wall is made of brick Two gun positions were set up in the wall, and two arc-shaped red brick walls were built in the wall rammed with more than one meter thick concrete.
