Nankai University was founded in 1919 by the famous patriotic educator Mr. Zhang Boling and Premier Zhou Enlai's alma mater.
The headquarters is located on the coast of Bohai Sea. On the square behind the main building of Nankai, the school bell, the symbol of Nankai spirit, is hung.

Nankai University was founded by Zhang Boling and Yan Xiu. On February 10, 1919, the opening ceremony of Nankai University was held; on September 7 and 8, the entrance examination of Nankai University was held. On September 25, Nankai University held the opening ceremony. It initially set up three subjects of liberal arts, science and business, and enrolled 96 students. Zhou Enlai was the first student of Liberal Arts (student number 62).
In the autumn of 1920, Xu Guiying was admitted to the Liberal Arts Department of Nankai University, setting a precedent for male and female students in the same school. In 1921, the Department of mining was set up (closed in 1926). In March 1922, the school rented more than 400 mu of public land in the south of the North Village of Balitai village to build teaching buildings, dormitories for boys and girls and teachers' houses.
In June 1923, after the completion of Xiushan hall, the first and second dormitories for boys, girls and teachers, a bronze statue of Xiushan was erected as a memorial. The Rockefeller Foundation of the United States donated 125000 yuan for construction and equipment, and Yuan Shuzhi of Henan donated 70000 yuan for the construction of the Science Museum. In August, Nankai University officially moved to the new site of Balitai. Nankai University began to take shape by setting up preparatory courses in addition to the four subjects of Arts, science, business and mining.
From 1927 to 1937, Nankai University made great progress in all aspects. In 1927, the social and Economic Research Committee (later renamed Economic Research Institute) and the Manchu Mongolian Research Association (later renamed northeast Research Association) were established. Lu Muzhai donated 100000 yuan to build the "Muzhai library". In 1928, graduate education began.
In 1929, it was changed into a college of liberal arts, a college of science, a college of business and a pre Medical College, with a total of 13 departments.
In 1930, according to the regulations of the Ministry of education of the national government, the original three subjects of science and business were changed into liberal arts college, science college and business college. In the following two years, the Department of chemical engineering and the Institute of applied chemistry were established. By the eve of the Anti Japanese War, Nankai University had become an institution of higher learning with three colleges, 12 departments and two research institutes, with 429 students and more than 110 staff.
In 1931, the school of business, the Department of economics and the Research Committee of social economy of the school of Arts merged to form the school of economics; the Department of chemical engineering and the Department of electrical engineering were established, affiliated to the school of science. Chen Zhiqin donated money to build the "Zhiqin building" of Nankai girls' dormitory
In 1932, the Institute of Applied Chemistry was established.
Nankai University, as a private university in the early days, was mainly funded by fund groups and private donations, except for a small amount of government subsidies, tuition fees and income from school production. The scale of the school is small. In 1937, there were only 429 students in the school, but the teaching staff is strong.
Short term development
The period of National Southwest United University
In July 1937, Nankai University was bombed by the Japanese army, and two-thirds of its buildings were destroyed. In August, Nankai University, Peking University and Tsinghua University formed the national Changsha temporary University. The presidents of the three universities, Zhang Boling, Jiang Menglin and Mei Yiqi, served as the Standing Committee members and took charge of the affairs of the University. In April of the next year, Changsha temporary University moved to Kunming and was renamed National Southwest United University.
In 1939, Nankai Economic Research Institute moved to Nankai Middle School in Chongqing to continue its research work and recruit graduate students. In July 1942, Nankai established the "frontier Humanities Research Office" in Kunming and published the journal frontier humanities.
The period of national Nankai University
After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, the three universities were demobilized and returned to the north. In 1946, Nankai University moved back to Tianjin and became a national university. After the resumption of the University, there will be 16 departments, including the College of Arts, the College of science, the College of political economy and the College of engineering, as well as the Institute of economics, the Institute of Applied Chemistry and the frontier Humanities Research Office.
In 1948, Oxford University sent a letter to the Ministry of education of the national government, confirming that graduates of Arts and Sciences from seven Chinese universities, including private Nankai University, with an average score of more than 80, would enjoy the status of "senior students of Oxford".

Nankai University
In January 1949, Tianjin was liberated and Nankai University began a new course. The Communist Party of China and the Chinese government are very concerned about the development of Nankai University. Premier Zhou Enlai visited his alma mater three times in 1951, 1957 and 1959; Chairman Mao Zedong visited Nankai in 1958; General Secretary Jiang Zemin visited Nankai in 1994; and central leaders such as Li Peng and Zhu Rongji visited Nankai successively.
In 1952, colleges and departments of national colleges and universities were adjusted, and Engineering College of Nankai University was merged into Tianjin University, with 14 departments and 3 specialized subjects. In 1958, the departments of trade, business management, accounting, finance, finance and statistics of Nankai University were transferred to the newly established Tianjin University of Finance and economics.
In 1960, the Department of Geology and Geography (closed in 1961), the second Department of Physics (transferred to Lanzhou University in 1961) and the Department of philosophy were established. Before the 1980s, there were nine departments, namely, mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, Chinese, foreign languages, philosophy, political economy, history and so on. From 1966 to 1976, the normal teaching order of Nankai University was destroyed. In 1971, the teaching and scientific research work was completely paralyzed. For five years, there was no enrollment or class. From 1966 to July 1976, the Tangshan earthquake affected Tianjin, and most of the school buildings were damaged to varying degrees.
After 1980, in order to meet the needs of socialist modernization, Nankai University has established a number of new specialties and research institutions by taking advantage of the good foundation of old specialties. On this basis, the school of economics was restored in 1983, and the major of interdisciplinary, marginal and information high-tech was added in science. By the middle and late 1980s, Nankai University had developed into a comprehensive university of Humanities and Social Sciences, natural sciences, technological sciences, life sciences, management sciences and arts.
On November 26, 1981, Nankai University was approved by the State Council as the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China. In 1984, Nankai University became one of the first batch of 22 universities in China to establish graduate schools.
In 1988, the State Education Commission selected the first batch of key disciplines for doctoral programs in Colleges and universities, and Nankai University ranked seventh among the first batch of 11 national key disciplines.
In 1994, Tianjin Institute of foreign trade was incorporated into Nankai University.
In December 1995, Nankai University became one of the first 15 universities listed in the national "211 Project". In 1999, it was selected into the first batch of national college students' cultural quality education bases.
On December 25, 2000, the Ministry of education and Tianjin Municipal People's government signed an agreement on the key construction of Nankai University. Nankai University entered the first batch of national "985 Project" key construction. In 2001, the first batch of national demonstration software colleges were approved. In 2006, the first group was selected as the "111 plan" subject innovation and talent introduction base. In 2009, the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee and the Ministry of Education jointly issued a document to determine 13 universities including Nankai University as the first batch of national cadre education and training university bases.
On March 7, 2010, the Ministry of education and Tianjin Municipal People's government signed an agreement to continue to focus on building Nankai University, preparing for the construction of Jinnan campus of Nankai University. On May 14, the reorganization system of China Tourism Management Cadre College was transferred to Nankai University, and the school of tourism and service of Nankai University was established.
In November 2012, it was selected as one of the first batch of excellent legal talent education and training bases in China.
In 2013, Tianjin chemical industry collaborative innovation center was recognized by the Ministry of education and selected into "2011 plan"; it was rated as "National Graduate Employment typical experience university"; it was selected into the first batch of study abroad demonstration base of the Ministry of education; it was identified as the first batch of social work professional training base of the Ministry of civil affairs.
In December 2014, Nankai University Glasgow University Joint Graduate School was approved to be established.
In July 2015, School of materials science and engineering of Nankai University and National Institute of new materials were founded. In August, Nankai University was selected as one of the first batch of "innovation and entrepreneurship bases for practical education in Colleges and universities nationwide". In September, Jinnan campus of Nankai University was completed and put into operation, initially forming a pattern of "one school, three districts" for Balitai campus, Jinnan campus and TEDA college.
On August 3, 2016, the Affiliated Hospital of Nankai University was founded at No. 4, Weishan Road, Hexi District (formerly Tianjin Fourth Hospital).
In September 2017, Nankai University was selected as one of the 36 class a universities in the list of "double first class" construction universities in China.
In January 2018, Nankai University was selected by the Ministry of education and listed in the first batch of Sino US young maker exchanges
