History and culture
Gualing village in Zengcheng has a history of more than 500 years. It is the only water dwelling group of Qing Dynasty in Guangzhou. It is said that around 1856, local villagers took three masted boats to make a living overseas and joined the gold rush in America. In the 1930s and 1940s, a large number of villagers went to New Zealand and other places to make a living.
Gualing village is a typical Lingnan water town style. The layout of waterways, lychee forest, watchtowers, ancestral halls and dwellings is of strategic significance in the war era. Waterways surround the whole village and play the role of protecting the village. On the bank, there is the tallest watchtower in the village (equivalent to 9 stories high), which can observe the enemy in the distance; on the other bank, there is lychee forest which has been growing for 100 years, which is quite dense. In the harvest season, the scene should be very lively.
Rural characteristics
Watchtower:
There are two watchtowers in gualing village. The one standing on the Guazhou river flowing through gualing village is called Ningyuan tower. It is four stories high, and each corner above three stories has a small blockhouse, so it is called four corner watchtower.
The watchtower on the water has its unique features. First of all, in case of invasion by foreign enemies, the suspension bridge connected with the river bank can be pulled up, so that the watchtower becomes easy to defend and difficult to attack. There is a stone tablet inlaid wall in the middle of the first floor of the Diaolou, which records the process of building.
The reason for the construction of Diaolou is that since the 1850s, there have been many villagers going abroad to make a living in gualing village. Most of them are women and children. In 1919 alone, bandits went to the village and kidnapped 36 overseas Chinese families.
In 1928, in order to prevent bandits from looting, the village's overseas Chinese donated money to build two watchtowers, one of which is Ningyuan tower.
During the Anti Japanese War, the watchtower also resisted the Japanese invaders, and the bullet marks on the iron windows of the watchtower can be seen.
Stone Bridge:
A stone bridge on the river in this village was built in the 1980s. It is called Dong'an bridge. It is said that before the bridge was built, the villagers crossed the river by ferry.
Old street:
On the West Bank of the river, the broadest street in the small village is called the old street. Facing the street are ancestral halls and academies. All of them face east. There are eight ancestral halls in total. Most of them have two entrances, which is relatively simple.
The scale is the four room Huanggong temple, which is a three entrance layout. Behind the 11 narrow Mashi alleys are about 200 old and new dwellings, with both pot ear rooms and villas. The layout is not particularly neat.
Dragon Boat:
On the East Bank of the village river is the litchi forest. There are two small branches of the river, about 20-30 meters long, each with a dragon boat. Every year on the Dragon Boat Festival, the village will row the dragon boat along the river and compete with the villages.
Dragon boat rowing is a major event for Lingnan water town, so there are detailed records of dragon boats in the village history. Before liberation, there were three dragon boats in the village, and after liberation, they were renovated and newly installed, all of which stopped at the shore, waiting for the next year's competition.
Beidi Temple:
Diaolou was built on the river and connected to the bank by a suspension bridge. Standing on the top of the carved building and looking north, beside the riverside highway is a small temple of the northern emperor, which was built in the reign of Emperor Qianlong.
